Sophomore Phoebe Werner earned a medal in all events to lead the Janesville Craig gymnastics team to a second-place finish in the Purple Division of the Purgolder Invite on Saturday.
Werner was third in the balance beam, fourth in the uneven bars and vault and fifth in the floor exercise to finish third in the overall. That helped Craig earned a score of 123.3, which was behind first-place Verona/Edgewood’s 125.2.
Janesville Parker senior Carson Richards finished third in the vault for the Vikings’ best finish. The Vikings were fourth with 107.725 points. Richards finished fifth in the overall, which was won by Madison United’s Tyra Turner.
Craig coach Jean Welch commended her team.
“We improved our team score from Tuesday, which can be difficult at an invite,” Welch said. “We’re headed in the right direction.”
The Cougars’ Ariyana Stalsberg turned in the top local finish. The sophomore was second in the floor exercise with a 9.0. Turner won the event with a 9.350.
