Few girls hockey teams in the state possess the offensive firepower and grit to battle back from a three-goal deficit.
The Rock County Fury showed their mettle again Saturday. Zoie Steig took over during the third period—scoring three goals—as the area’s co-op team rallied for a 4-3 win over visiting Appleton United in its regular-season finale at the Janesville Ice Arena.
Appleton United (5-15-1) had a 3-0 lead 6:26 into the second period against the state’s No. 5 team but couldn’t hold on.
Rock County (19-3-2) heads into the WIAA postseason with eight wins in its last nine games. The top-seeded Fury host Mauston on Friday in a regional semifinal in Janesville.
Steig, a senior attending Janesville Craig High, recorded her second hat trick of the season. She needed just over 22 minutes to complete her first, which came on Dec. 5. Steig needed 5 minutes, 23 seconds to achieve the same feat Saturday.
Haley Knauf and Dani Heitsman each assisted on two of Steig’s goals.
Anika Horman had two goals and an assist for Appleton United. Presley Kovacevich started Rock County’s rally with a goal at 8:26 in the second period.
