The Rock County Fury’s hopes of achieving a perfect conference record were dashed Tuesday.
The area’s girls hockey co-op was upset, 5-3, by the Cap City Cougars in a Badger Conference game at the Sun Prairie Ice Arena.
Rock County (17-3-2, 9-1-0 Badger) had a six-game winning streak snapped. Cap City (14-6-1) has won five of its last six games.
The Fury took the lead on Zoie Steig’s even-strength goal 3:28 into the first period before four different Cougars scored in the second period. Haley Knauf scored twice in the third period, but Rock County’s rally fell short.
Montana Cruz led Cap City with two goals and an assist.
“We have to give credit to them,” Rock County coach Luke Steurer said. “We came out in the first period and were not playing our game. We were losing battles for the puck and races.
“The girls came out in the third period aggressive and wanting the win. If we come out and play all three periods like that I think it’s a different game.”
The loss was ultimately meaningless for the state’s No. 4 team. The Fury clinched their first-ever conference title with a win over the Metro Lynx last Thursday and have two regular-season games remaining before they will enter the postseason as one of the favorites to advance to state.
