The Rock County Fury girls hockey team finished second in Hartland Arrowhead’s Thanksgiving tournament, losing a shootout to the Bay Area Ice Bears in the title game Saturday at Mullett Ice Arena.

Rock County out-shot Bay Area 38-21 during regulation, with goalie McKaylie Buescher recording her second shutout of the two-day tournament, but the Fury couldn’t find a game-winning goal. The Ice Bears won the shootout 3-2 to claim the tournament crown.

It was a strong result for the Fury (3-0-1) against a state-ranked opponent. Bay Area was ranked No. 4 in a preseason coaches poll.

“Our team worked hard the whole game and kept pushing each other in a tough game with very little break in between,” Rock County coach Luke Stuerer said. “Being able to come out of this game with a tie against of the top teams ranked in (the) state was impressive.”

A few hours earlier, Haley Knauf and Dani Heitsman scored two goals apiece as the Fury buried Brookfield 7-2 to advance to the final.

Heitsman, Ally Burke, and Zoie Steig each scored in the second period. Rock County added three goals in the third period to pull away.

Maggy Henschler opened the game’s scoring at 14:54 in the first period.

Steig and Alyssa Knauf scored to give the Fury a 2-0 win over Arrowhead in Friday’s tournament opener.
