Jennah Hartwig is still waiting for her Janesville Parker High girls basketball team to put an entire game together.
On Tuesday night, the Vikings head coach was also waiting for some better calls from the officials.
Parker fell behind 12-2, rallied, but then saw a questionable call foul out junior forward Julia Hartwig with five minutes left in the game. Madison East pulled away for a 71-58 Big Eight Conference girls basketball victory Tuesday night.
The Vikings fell to 6-9 overall and 4-8 in league play. East is in second place at 9-2 in conference and 10-4 overall.
Jennah Hartwig was not pleased with the way her team started the game, and she definitely was not pleased the way the game was called in the second half.
The Vikings were whistled for 28 fouls, and sophomore guard Jena Forrestal joined Julia Hartwig on the bench after fouling out.
“How do you compete against that?” Jennah Hartwig asked. “I don’t know what you do against that.”
East made 16 of 24 free throws in the second half.
The Vikings’ slow start did not help. They trailed 34-19 at halftime.
“We played with more heart in the second half,” Hartwig said. “The second half we attacked the basket more and got some fast-break opportunities.
Julia Hartwig had 22 points when she was whistled for her fifth foul on defense with the Vikings trailing by five points.
Jennah Hartwig was encouraged by 11 points from Tina Shelton and eight from Jena Forrestal.
“They shot with more confidence,” Hartwig said. “Now if we can only play that way in the first half. I’m really excited (to) play Sun Prairie on Friday night. We just have to put it together.”
