High school girls basketball teams have one more week to pad their resumes before the WIAA tournament bracket is seeded.
Janesville Craig made sure Saturday that it will have a chance to go into its seeding meeting with a .500 record.
The Cougars needed less than five minutes to build a double-digit lead on visiting Beloit Memorial and ran away with a 83-30 Big Eight Conference victory on Bob Suter Court.
Craig is 9-10 overall and 6-9 in league play. Beloit fell to 2-17 and 0-15.
“The mark of a good team is how they respond after a tough loss and how they respond against a team that’s struggling,” said Craig coach Kerry Storbakken, whose team lost at Janesville Parker on Thursday. “We answered both questions. We came out with energy and blitzed them right away.”
Cougars freshman Claudia Fieiras led all scorers with 25 points, including 18 in the first half.
She had three straight layups off turnovers to give the Cougars a 12-1 lead, and the Purple Knights didn’t have a field goal until there was 13:03 left in the half.
“How about Claudia? I think she had six points in about 15 seconds,” Storbakken said. “Our kids came ready to play.
“Sometimes you lose to a crosstown rival and feel sorry for yourselves and you’re moping. Our kids didn’t do that.”
Beloit didn’t score for more than six minutes to start the second half as Craig’s lead ballooned to 47.
The final nine minutes of the game were played with a running clock.
Craig sophomore Cassie Goswick added 16 points, while Brooke Parkhurst and Rileigh Elgas each had 10.
Craig will attempt to get to .500 and avenge a home loss against Madison Memorial from earlier this season when the teams meet Friday night in Madison.
“It’s going to be huge,” Storbakken said. “There is going to be a pack of about seven or eight schools fighting for seeds maybe six through 12. It’s a big game.”
