Janesville Craig wanted to go for a win, settled for an attempt at a tie and ultimately went home with a Big Eight Conference girls basketball loss Tuesday night.

The Cougars’ shot attempt in the final seconds was blocked, which enabled Verona to hold on to a 57-55 victory.

Craig had the final possession after drawing an offensive foul in the backcourt with seven seconds left. The Cougars inbounded the ball from underneath their basket, and they planned to go for the win.

“We set up for a 3 for (Cassie) Goswick,” Craig coach Kerry Storbakken said. “We wanted to go for the win on the road.”

But the Wildcats pounced on Goswick, who had four of the nine Craig 3-pointers in the game. Junior Emily Pierson drove the lane, her shot for the tie was blocked and the clock ran out.

Goswick led the Cougars with 14 points. Pierson had 12 points, including two 3s.

Verona led by six points in the first half, and the Cougars built a six-point lead in the second.

“It was back and forth,” Storbakken said. “One team would get up by five or six, and then the other team answered.”

Verona guards Rayna Briggs and Chandler Bainbridge scored 18 and 16 points, respectively.

“They killed us on drives,” Storbakken said. “Those two had nice games.”

Craig dropped to 4-5 in the conference and 7-5 overall. Verona went to 5-4 and 5-8.

“We had a chance to win on the road,” Storbakken said.

The Cougars have another road game Friday at Madison La Follette.
