The winning streak reached five games Friday night for Walworth Big Foot High’s girls basketball team.
Senior guard Courtney Schoenbeck made two free throws with 14 seconds left and sophomore Reagan Courier scored 19 points to lift the Chiefs to a pivotal 59-58 Rock Valley Conference win over McFarland.
Big Foot (13-5, 12-2 RVC) remained in sole possession of second place in the Rock, one game behind Jefferson.
With the win, Big Foot avenged both of its first-round conference losses. The Chiefs beat previously unbeaten Jefferson last week and McFarland on Friday.
“It feels good to win a game at the end for a change,” Big Foot coach Rick Schoenbeck said. “We were due.
“We caught a little bit of break when they missed, but we fought back after getting down and found a way.”
Big Foot led by five at half and pushed the lead to 11 with 13 minutes left on two Courier free throws.
McFarland (11-7, 10-4), which fell out of a third-place tie with Whitewater with the loss, stormed back.
Trailing 46-42 with 8:53 to play, the Spartans went on a 13-0 run over the span of a little more than four minutes to take a 55-46 lead.
“They did the same exact thing to us up there when we played them,” Schoenbeck said of the Spartans’ big second-half run. “Fortunately this time, we regrouped and hit a couple of big shots and made our free throws.”
McFarland led 57-50 with 2:50 to play but was outscored 9-1 the rest of the way. Courier made four straight free throws to cut the lead to three, and after a McFarland free throw with 37 seconds left made it 58-54, Payton Courier made a 3-pointer for Big Foot with 25 seconds left to cut the deficit to one.
The Spartans turned the ball over on the ensuing possession, and Schoenbeck was fouled on a drive to the basket with 14 seconds left. The University of South Dakota recruit calmly stepped to the line and made both free throws.
McFarland had one last chance to win the game but missed on a good look under the basket with two seconds left.
Schoenbeck finished with 13 points, while teammate Sophia Foster added 10.
“McFarland did a pretty good job of defending Courtney,” coach Schoenbeck said. “She didn’t have a lot of good looks, so we’re going to have to work harder and come up with a better way to get our scorers the ball.
“But to come out of here with a win is big for us. Those were two games, back-to-back at home, that we had to have to keep our hopes alive of a conference championship.”
Jefferson hosts Whitewater in a key RVC makeup game Tuesday night. Big Foot hosts Brodhead in a makeup game Monday night.
