Stacy Skemp can see that her team is believing in itself.

When her Milton Red Hawks girls basketball team was down double digits in the second half at perennial Badger South Conference title-contender Stoughton on Tuesday, they never backed down.

Milton chipped away at the deficit, got a free throw from Carley Albrecht to send the game to overtime and won, 62-61, on junior Chloe Buescher’s inside bucket with 3.5 seconds left in overtime.

The Red Hawks are 4-0 overall and 3-0 and tied atop the Badger South with third-ranked Monroe. Stoughton, which was ranked seventh in the latest coaches poll released Tuesday, fell to 4-1 and 2-1.

“We’ve had some of these girls since we started coaching here, and they’re buying in,” Skemp said. “Everyone is comfortable with their role. Chloe has been leading us in scoring, with other players stepping up, and we’re having a lot of fun.

“All of those things together make it a lot easier.”

Nothing came easy Tuesday. The Red Hawks found themselves in a physical battle. If they were stunned by that style early, though, they didn’t show it late.

Milton consistently found Buescher inside, and she scored a game-high 19 points. Her work opened up shots for Abbie Campion (12 points) and Kailey Harbort (10).

After going back-and-forth down the stretch in regulation, Albrecht, who had seven points, sent the game to OT from the line.

“Our full-court press, we didn’t get a ton of steals from it, but it caused Stoughton to play a little bit faster than maybe they wanted to,” Skemp said. “Then the girls came in and knocked down free throws. They kept their composure.”

Buescher’s bucket in the final seconds gave Milton the lead for good. Stoughton went the length of the court in 3.5 seconds, but its buzzer-beater didn’t fall.

Milton hosts Oregon in a Badger South game Saturday night.
