JANESVILLE

Thanks to a record-setting performance from its 300 shuttle hurdles relay team, the Milton girls track and field team won the Cougar Relays title Friday night at Monterey Stadium.

Milton finished with 96 points to win the seven-team event, with Kenosha Indian Trail second with 87 and host Janesville Craig third with 75.

Kenosha Indian Trail coasted to the boys team title with 118 points. Janesville Parker was second with 97 and Craig third with 78.5.

Milton broke a record in the first event of the meet. The team of Chrissy Hughes, Lindsey Heitsman and Ali Jaecks won with a time of 49.8 seconds. The old mark of 50.4 was set by Parker in 2003.

The threesome also ran to victory in the 300 intermediate shuttle hurdle relay with a time of 50.8.

Milton also won the girls high jump with a combined mark of 13 feet, 6 inches.

Julia Hartwig led the Parker girls to wins in the shot put and discus relays. She had the top throw in each event. She threw the shot put 40-7 feet and the discus 115-5. Sarah Varga and Mackenzie Schroeder were also on both winning teams.

“We’ve got a lot of injuries right now, especially with our sprinters, but I thought the girls competed hard tonight,” Parker coach Kristin Collins.

“And in these conditions, Julia had good winning throws in both shot and discus.”

Peyton Sippy, Grace Meister and Clare Hulick ran on Craig’s victorious 3,200 and distance medley relays.

“It was really cold, and it rained the first part of the meet,” Craig girls coach Brad Troeger said. “That makes it tough, but I’m pleased with how it went.

“Our discus team got second, and all three of them had PRs tonight. That was a real highlight.”

The Parker boys won the last event of the meet—the 1,600 relay—in finishing second overall. Senior Seamus Murphy anchored the winning 1,600 team and also led the Vikings to victory in the 800 relay.

The Craig boys won two events, and head coach Jeff Deininger said the Cougar Relays remain a special meet.

“It’s great to get out and compete and see where you’re at as a team, but the neatest thing about this every year is honoring the Special Olympics athletes,” Deininger said. “That’s what it’s all about. To see the smile on their faces, and the reaction they get from the crowd as they cheer them on.”
