The Northland Pines boys hockey team kept Janesville’s defense busy Thursday.
The team out of Eagle River put 56 shots on goal in a 7-1 victory over the Bluebirds, the city’s co-op team, in a game at the Joe Raymond Memorial Holiday Classic.
Northland Pines scored three times in the first period, including the last with just two seconds left, to seize control.
“They’ve got a real good core of kids,” Bluebirds coach John Mauermann said. “The big backbreaker ... was when we gave up a goal with two seconds to go in the first. We needed to work harder at that point to get in the locker room and regroup.”
Ben Coulter scored on the power play early in the second to get Janesville back within 3-1, but Northland Pines scored two to answer back.
Owen Aldrich had 49 saves for the Bluebirds.
“Owen had his best game of the year, we just didn’t do much around him,” Mauermann said.
Janesville wraps up tournament play at 4 p.m. today.
