The Janesville Bluebirds struggled to solve Arrowhead goalie Peter Genatempo on Thursday night, and it cost them a chance at their first victory this season.
Genatempo stopped 19 of the 20 shots he saw, and Arrowhead beat the city boys hockey co-op 3-1 in a nonconference game at the Janesville Ice Arena.
Arrowhead took an early lead as Tyler Trivett put the Warhawks up 1-0 at 9:32 of the opening period on a power-play tally.
Just two minutes later, a Kyler Kobs goal evened the game at 1 for the Bluebirds.
Kobs took a pass from Connor Joyce and sent the puck low glove-side on Genatempo.
The Warhawks added two more goals by the time the first period ended, and neither team found the back of the net the rest of the game.
“We played with a lot more energy than we normally do,” Bluebirds head coach John Mauermann said. “We kinda shot ourselves in the foot a little bit in the first period at the end, but that Arrowhead goalie is one of the best in the state and we just couldn’t find the back of the net.
“It was a good effort for the guys, and we continue to see improvement so that is a big positive.”
Trivett finished the game with two goals and Genatempo recorded 19 saves.
Cody Kaas finished with 24 saves for the Bluebirds, who fell to 0-6.
The Bluebirds host Middleton in a Big Eight Conference game at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Janesville Ice Arena.
