Watertown’s Trevor Tietz took care of Janesville Parker’s hopes for a tournament title and third straight boys basketball victory Friday night.
Tietz hit a jumper from the elbow with three seconds left to give the Goslings’ a 42-40 victory over the Vikings in the title game of the Southside Shootout at Cudahy High.
The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Vikings (2-9), who had beaten Beloit Memorial and Milwaukee Carmen after starting the season 0-9. Chris Galvan led Parker with 16 points.
“We had a 10-point lead in the second half, but we just weren’t able to get to the free throw line enough,” said Parker coach Keith Miller. “We were in the double bonus with five minutes left, but we shot just 10 free throws the entire game. We just weren’t aggressive enough.”
Tietz finished with 20 of the Goslings’ 42 points.
“He was tough,” Miller said. “He had seven two-pointers, so he wasn’t shooting a lot of 3s. He was aggressive and was a good catch-and-shoot guy. He was tough to guard.”
After Tietz hit his shot, the Vikings called timeout. A half-court shot at the buzzer missed.
The Vikings get back to Big Eight action next Friday with a game against Madison Memorial.
