Monroe High’s free-throw shooting carried the Cheesemakers to a boys basketball victory Saturday afternoon over Vince Umnus and Elkhorn.

The host Cheesemakers outscored Elkhorn 15-8 in the final 3 ½ minutes en route to a 78-73 noconference victory.

Elkhorn led 65-63, erasing a 32-25 halftime deficit. Umnus led the Elks’ surge, hitting five 3-pointers in the final half. The 5-foot-11 guard scored 23 of the Elks’ 48 second-half points and finished with 31.

Elkhorn made 11 3-pointers, including six by Umnus and three by Devon Davey.

But Monroe countered and made its free throws when Elkhorn was forced to foul in the final minutes. The Cheesemakers made 24 of 33 free throws in the game.

Elkhorn fell to 5-3 with the loss.

Kade King scored 25 points to help the Cheesemakers even their season mark at 4-4.
