Middleton High’s boys basketball team was dialed in from long distance Friday night.

The Cardinals made 12 3-pointers en route to a 67-53 Big Eight Conference win over Janesville Craig.

Middleton (2-2, 2-2) led by 14 at halftime and stretched the lead to as many as 22 the second half.

Craig first-year coach Ben McCormick said his team ran into a buzzsaw.

“Give them credit,” McCormick said of the Cardinals. “They shot the ball really well and got great balanced scoring. They had three guys in double figures and three guys with eight or nine points. That’s tough to beat.

“We were outhustled at times and and couldn’t match their runs.”

Middleton’s Brogan Brunker, who came into the game leading the Big Eight in scoring at 26.1 points per game, had 16 points to lead the balanced attack.

Jacob Ngobi had a game-high 18 points for Craig, while Seve Bertagnoli scored a career-high 17 points for the Cougars.

Craig’s Blake McCann, who came in second in the conference in scoring with a 21-point average, finished with 14.

“Seve really stepped up tonight and gave us that third scoring option that we’ve been looking for,” McCormick said. “But we just couldn’t get enough stops defensively.”

Craig (2-3, 1-3) hosts crosstown rival Janesville Parker on Thursday night.
