Jack Huml connected on two 3-pointers in the final five seconds, including the game-winner at the buzzer, as the Janesville Craig Cougars snatched a Big Eight Conference win from the Madison East Purgolders, 78-77, on Saturday in Madison.
Jacob Ngobi made a 3 with 26 seconds remaining to pull the Cougars within two points. East extended its lead with a pair of free throws and Huml answered with his first 3.
After an East turnover, Craig heaved the ball from its own baseline with 1.8 seconds left. Seve Bertagnoli out-jumped a defender and found a wide-open Huml, who didn’t miss from the left wing.
Craig coach Ben McCormick said the team had prepared for just the situation they faced in the final seconds against East.
“Honestly, seven or eight times in practice,” he said. “Each week we run through different situations. We’d practiced it before.”
Huml, a junior, had eight points in a season-best performance.
“He came in after not playing a ton in the second half and was still focusing,” McCormick said. “It was a great moment for him.”
Blake McCann led the Cougars with 27 points while Ngobi added 26.
Craig picked up its first Big Eight win of the season, improving to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in conference. East dropped to 0-1.
The Cougars trailed by five points with less than three minutes to play before rallying. The Purgolders led 40-36 at halftime.
