All the pressure was on Union Grove.
The 12-game winning streak. The No. 1 seed. The lofty state ranking. The conference championship.
None of it mattered Saturday.
Elkhorn Area held Union Grove to 13 points in the first half and toppled the top-seeded Broncos, 47-35, to clinch the school’s first regional title since 2009.
“We didn’t feel there was much pressure on us,” Elkhorn coach Josh Skatrud coach said. “You just go and play.
“We won with our defense and rebounding tonight.”
Vince Umnus scored 11 points to lead the fourth-seeded Elks (17-7), who will face second-seeded Westosha Central on Thursday in a WIAA Division 2 sectional semifinal at Janesville Craig. The Southern Lakes opponents split two regular-season games. Westosha won the first meeting, 59-42, on Dec. 8. Elkhorn took the rematch, 60-57, on Jan. 30.
Union Grove (19-5), ranked No. 7 in Division 2, hadn’t lost since a 56-42 defeat at Elkhorn on Jan. 9, the only blemish on the Broncos’ Southern Lakes Conference title.
So the Elks knew they had the ability to defeat the favored Broncos.
“We did feel we matched up well with them on both ends of the floor,” Skatrud said. “We kind of got our matchups right. We do a good job taking away the other team’s best players. That was the key, we took away (Jack) Pettit and (Riley) Hale.”
Pettit finished with 10 points to lead Union Grove, which shot 25.5 percent from the field. The Broncos had beaten the Elks in the playoffs each of the past two seasons.
Elkhorn shot 47.4 percent and out-rebounded Union Grove 34-24.
