The Janesville Bluebirds finally got an opponent they could handle, and the city’s boys co-op hockey squad took advantage of the opportunity.
Six players scored goals and the Bluebirds defeated visiting Madison East/La Follette 10-0 in a Big Eight Conference game at the Janesville Ice Arena on Thursday night.
“A lot of kids got a chance tonight,” Janesville coach John Mauermann said. “It wasn’t just one group.”
Eastside committed a major penalty early in the game, which gave the Bluebirds a five-minute power play. Kyle Ward and Hayden Funk each put in a power-play goal apiece, and Janesville was off to its second win of the season.
“The penalty gave us two early goals, and we continued to work hard in the first period,” Mauermann said. “We ended up with 23 pucks on the net. That was a pretty good start.”
Janesville led 5-0 after one period. The Bluebirds added two goals in the second period and three in the third.
Ben Coulter led the offensive showing with two goals and five assists on the night. Conor Joyce, Funk and Ward each finished with two goals.
The Bluebirds’ defense was just as impressive, allowing the visitors just four shots, which goalie Owen Aldrich was able to turn back.
The win was just the second in 13 games for the Bluebirds and moved them to 2-5 in the Big Eight Conference. Mauermann said he still was optimistic.
“We’ve played a lot of good teams,” he said. “I counted up their records and it was something like 94-42. We don’t have a lot to show for our effort.
“We’re not bad, but we have to keep getting better.”
The Bluebirds are off until they play Madison West at home next Tuesday.
