Janesville Craig’s last-second shot in regulation rimmed out and the Cougars watched host Madison La Follette hit 11 of 14 free throws in overtime in an 89-85 loss in Big Eight Conference boys basketball action Saturday night.
Blake McCann scored 29 points, including four 3-pointers, but the Cougars dropped to 4-5 in the Big Eight and 5-6 overall. The Lancers are 7-3 in conference and 10-3 overall.
Jacob Ngobi hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 76-all with just seconds left in regulation. Ngobi then stole the inbounds pass and was fouled with 0.7 seconds left. The Cougars weren’t in the bonus and got the ball on an inbounds play.
Luke Malmanger took the shot and it rimmed out.
The Cougars fell behind early in overtime and were forced to foul, but the Lancers’ free-throw shooting was good enough to hold the lead.
“We did a good job of extending the game,” Craig coach Ben McCormick said. “They just hit their free throws.”
McCormick was proud of the way his team battled back from a double-digit deficit in the second half.
“It was a good high school basketball game,” McCormick said.
