Mallory Klotz hit an RBI single in the top of the seventh as the UW-Whitewater softball team defeated Illinois Wesleyan 1-0 on Friday in Game 1 of the best-of-three NCAA Division III Super Regional in Bloomington, Illinois.
Klotz, a senior left fielder from New Berlin, drove in Kaiden Jackson, who had doubled, for her program-record 231st career hit and the game’s only run.
Whitewater pitcher Bella Matthias struck out the side after giving up back-to-back hits in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the win. The sophomore struck out seven and gave up three hits in seven innings.
Illinois Wesleyan’s Ally Wiegand totaled 11 strikeouts in the loss.
Game 2 is set for 1 p.m. today. If Illinois Wesleyan wins, Game 3 will be at 3:30 p.m. The winner of the Super Regional advances to the NCAA Championships in Oklahoma City.
