Whatever Keri Carollo and her UW-Whitewater women’s basketball staff do at halftime this season is working.

The Warhawks broke away from a halftime tie to take a 46-35 lead late in the third quarter and then hung on for a 61-58 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory at UW-Eau Claire on Saturday. The win keeps the Warhawks in a first-place tie with Oshkosh at 6-2 in the WIAC.

The Warhawks (16-3 overall, 6-2 WIAC) have outscored their opponents by nearly 100 points in the third quarter this season.

Seniors Andrea Meinert and Malia Smith each hit two free throws in the final 19 seconds, and Eau Claire missed a final 3-point attempt to seal the Warhawks’ victory.

Smith led the Warhawks with 17 points. She hit all eight of her free throws.

Meinert had 12 points, two assists and three steals. Sophomore guard Camri Conley added 10 points, while senior guard Brooke Trewyn had a game-high four blocks and added two steals to help UW-Whitewater force 26 turnovers.
