UW-Whitewater’s men’s basketball team must feel a bit snakebitten as the end of the regular season approaches.
The Warhawks’ losing streak reached three games Wednesday night, but the team has lost those three games by a combined 16 points.
UW-W forged a tie with host No. 6 UW-Platteville with just over a minute left Wednesday night, but the Pioneers held the Warhawks scoreless from there in a 70-66 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference loss.
UW-Platteville is 21-3 overall and 11-2 in the WIAC. UW-Whitewater fell to 16-8 and 6-7 and will be the No. 5 seed in the conference tournament next week.
Junior guard Andre Brown led the Warhawks with 16 points and three steals. Janesville Craig graduate Riley Jensen added 13.
Platteville led by as many as 16 points in the first half and by a dozen at halftime.
But the Warhawks clawed their way back within striking distance early in the second half and finally tied the game, 66-66, on David Sachs’ jumper with 1:19 remaining.
Down 68-66, UW-W had a chance to tie or take the lead in the final 20 seconds but could not convert.
UW-W closes out the regular season Saturday with a 5 p.m. home game against UW-La Crosse.
