A slow start doomed UW-Whitewater’s men’s basketball team Wednesday night.
UW-Platteville jumped out to an 18-4 lead and coasted to an 84-67 win in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game in the Kachel Gymnasium.
Eighth-ranked Whitewater (14-4, 4-3) was held to 37.5 percent shooting, including a 25 percent clip in the first half. Platteville hit 62 percent of its shots, including 69.6 percent in the second half.
Junior guard Andre Brown scored 16 points to lead Whitewater, while junior forward Derek Rongstad (Middleton) had 15 points, four rebounds and two steals. Maurquis Turner added 13 points.
The Pioneers (15-3, 5-2) opened the game on a 12-2 run over the first four minutes and eventually led 18-4 with 12:47 to play in the half.
The Warhawks got as close as eight in the half after a layup with 3:13 remaining, but Platteville scored six of the last seven points to take a 37-24 lead at halftime.
Platteville went on a 10-0 run early in the second half to take a 51-31 lead with 14:57 left.
Whitewater begins the second half of the WIAC slate at 7.p.m Saturday against UW-Eau Claire on All-American Night at Kachel Gymnasium.
