The season came to a disappointing end Wednesday night for UW-Whitewater’s men’s basketball team.
A 15-5 run to end the game lifted UW-River Falls to a 79-68 win in a WIAC first-round tournament game.
River Falls (17-8) plays at top-seeded UW-Platteville on Friday night in a semifinal game.
Junior forward Derek Rongstad scored a career-high 34 points and added nine rebounds for the Warhawks (16-10 overall), who cut a double-digit deficit down to one with five minutes to play.
Junior guard Mitchell Pfeifer added 13 points and six rebounds.
Janesville Craig graduate and sophomore forward Riley Jensen had seven points and four rebounds.
River Falls led by 18 points midway through the first half. The Warhawks chipped away at the lead, getting it down to nine with 3:18 left in the half.
Whitewater was in the midst of its 20th straight WIAC Tournament appearance.
