UW-Whitewater’s playoff run ended one win shy of the NCAA softball championships.
The Illinois Wesleyan Titans swept the Warhawks, 7-0 and 3-0, on Saturday in Bloomington, Illinois, to win the best-of-three Division III Super Regional and move on to this week’s championships in Oklahoma City.
Illinois Wesleyan advanced to the championship tournament for the third straight season.
Whitewater (29-13-1) won Friday’s series opener 1-0 but couldn’t get the second win it needed to advance to the NCAA championships for the first time since 2014. The Warhawks totaled six hits in Saturday’s doubleheader.
Illinois Wesleyan (36-11-1) broke open a scoreless tie in the first game Satuday when Sydney Alery and Sam Berghoff hit back-to-back solo home runs off Whitewater pitcher Julia Camardo in the top of the sixth.
Berghoff hit a grand slam in the seventh as part of a five-run frame.
Alery opened the scoring in the second game with a home run to center field in the bottom of the first. Wesleyan added two more runs in the fourth on Julie Josten’s single and a wild pitch.
