Andre Brown’s free-throw shooting helped the UW-Whitewater men’s basketball team pull off an overtime win at La Crosse in WIAC action Saturday.

Brown hit two free throws with three seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime, and his four free throws in the extra session helped the Warhawks pull out a 67-64 victory over the Eagles.

The win puts the Warhawks at 4-2 in the WIAC and 14-3 overall. La Crosse fell to 2-4, 10-7.

Whitewater and Platteville are tied for second in the WIAC behind 6-0 Stevens Point, which defeated the Warhawks at Whitewater on Wednesday and the visiting Pioneers 80-74 on Saturday night. The Warhawks and Pioneers play Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Kachel Gymnasium.

Brown led Whitewater on Saturday with 18 points and six assists. Junior Derek Rongstad recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

The teams struggled scoring in the first half, which ended with the Eagles on top 20-19.

Dalton Menke’s 3-pointer gave the Warhawks their biggest lead in the second half at 36-30 with 12:02 left, but the Eagles rallied. Taulvish McCray’s two free throws put La Crosse up 55-51 with just 19 seconds left in regulation.

Rongstad then hit a critical 3-pointer to bring the Warhawks to within a point with 12 seconds left.

La Crosse’s Tanner Bruchs was fouled with eight seconds left, and he made the first free throw but missed the second.

Brown was fouled while shooting with three seconds left, and the junior guard made both to send the game into overtime.

The game was tied for the 12th and final time at 62-all with 1:19 left in overtime. Brown put the Warhawks ahead for good with a field goal with 49 seconds left, and then he made two free throws at the 17-second mark to give the Warhawks a 66-62 lead.

La Crosse cut it to 66-64 with a field goal with nine seconds left, but Dalton Menke made the second of two free throws with seven seconds remaining and a La Crosse 3-point attempt missed at the buzzer.
