Walworth County Fair an ideal destination for tourists
Photo
ELKHORN If you go to the Walworth County Fair next week, you’ll be among attendants from the Midwest, far corners of the United States and even other parts of the world.
People travel from far and wide to attend the fair, filling hotels, restaurants and shops in Elkhorn and beyond.
They’re from places as close as Milwaukee, Chicago and Rockford, Ill., to areas as far as New York, California and Europe.
Organizers say the fair is a destination event for people outside Walworth County for many reasons: its location, reputation, Labor Day timing and proximity to other attractions.
“We are the largest tourism event in Walworth County,” fair spokeswoman Sue Pruessing said. “You can’t really find a hotel anywhere in the area during the fair.”
Steve Hatcher, executive director of the Elkhorn Chamber of Commerce, said the city booms during fair time.
“Our community during fair week goes from a town of 9,000 to about 150,000,” Hatcher said. “That’s a lot of folks. We’ve got 150,000 new faces around here for a week.”
Bob Williams, state coordinator for Wisconsin county fairs, said Walworth County’s fair attracted 157,000 people in 2007, rivaling Sheboygan County for the highest attendance in the state.
By comparison, Rock County’s fair attracted 70,000 people.
Part of Walworth County’s success is its proximity to metro areas such as Milwaukee and Chicago, Williams said. And the fair is close to attractions such as Geneva Lake.
Walworth County also had the most exhibits in 2007 and paid the most in prize money, he said.
“It’s always been a good fair to go to,” Williams said.
The fair started more than 150 years ago, Pruessing said, and people once rode the train to the fair from Chicago.
The fair was the last summer hurrah for industrialists in the surrounding metro areas who wanted one last weekend out of the city, she said.
Much of today’s fair success stems from those early beginnings.
“People typically do this as their last big thing before they go back to the city and close their summer homes,” Pruessing said. “It’s been a great getaway.”
Another attraction is that the fair is one of only seven in the state that still has harness racing.
And it has listed Johnny Cash, Kenny Rogers, Kenny Chesney and Keith Urban as its grandstand performers over the years.
“They’ve always had some pretty big-time entertainment,” Williams said.
The state estimates the fair contributes $4 million to the local economy.
The money comes from thousands of visitors, exhibitors and vendors who sleep, shop and spend money in Walworth County, said Kathleen Seeberg, executive director of the Walworth County Visitors Bureau.
“I have spoken to a lot of visitors who say they attend the fair every year and look forward to returning,” Seeberg said. “This is the only fair they go to.
“We’re their choice,” she said. “We’re their destination.”
The fair also has become the time for families and former classmates to reunite, Pruessing said, and the event employs dozens of seasonal workers.
Williams, who has attended all 76 county and district fairs in the state, said Walworth County’s fair is among the best.
“I think Walworth County has built up a good name for itself and it has built up a tradition, so I think that is what makes it a destination fair,” he said. “Walworth County kind of reminds you of the traditional county fair.”

"I never understood why the county fair needs bathroom attendents."
..
To put it bluntly -- because people are slobs. Yes, there are those that pick up after themselves but there are MORE that don't.
..
Yeah, it might "cost" you 50 cents or a buck for a tip, but those bathrooms are kept clean! (Years ago it was a way different story...)

And don't forget to bring money to pay the bathroom attendents to "guide" you to a stall and maybe hand you a paper towel. They get pretty angry if you don't tip them! I never understood why the county fair needs bathroom attendents. The county fair!

You must spend the day at the Walworth Co Fair! I think the Grandstand with the track in front is about the same size as Rock Co Fair.I read that with everything inside the fence it's around 100 acres. If money is tight bring a lunch & have a picnic in the park there's alway something going on at the park stage. You really don't have to spent any money once you are in except for food or rides.

One of the best things about the Walworth County Fair is that there is NO ALCOHOL either sold or allowed on the grounds and they routinely refuse admittance to people who've been drinking and throw those caught with alcohol out.

moethebartender, I appreciate your comments and agree that her talent will be showcased in another more fair venue. As for mymaro I do not feel she is the best at everything, just the things I know she is best at. I am for the most part a well balanced and fair person. I just get extremely angry when I see people (and that means any people) being treated unfairly. My child made it into the finals the last two years and I never was upset that she did not win. She was not the best those years. This year she was at the very least in the top two and denied the finals. I have never once gotten upset in prior years because she was treated fairly. And yes, at some point when I get my hands on a camcorder I think I will put her on U-Tube. Thanks turkeyman for trying to protect her. And no, I do not feel attacked. I can see why people could assume I am being a stage mom. But you are all wrong. I am being fair.

I've never been to the Walworth County Fair. Is it much larger than the Rock County Fair? How do the prices compare, I know I couldn't even afford to go to the Rock County fair this year.

Sheri
Don't put your daughter on youtube It's one thing to sit here & pick on you. It's entirely different
to do it to a little kid.

Hey Sheri, put your kid on YouTube and let us be the judge! You sit here and criticize, show us just how great your child is...

wow, sherim really holds a grudge. lmao! i bet your kid is the best singer, athlete, student, and so on to. its natural to support your children but to blame their shortcomings on others is ludacris.
with that said, i live here in glorious janesville but i prefer to take my kids to the walworth county fair. so much more room, better food, more rides, more exhibits, and way better parking. all this shows in the attendance figures, walworth county fairs attendance is more than double that of rock county. I wish theyd move rock county fair, i know janesville could make it great.

If your child intends on pursuing a singing career, she needs to be prepared to lose, to be criticized, and to be hurt in general. If she is truly talented, she does not need to get into the finals at a local fair to be prove it. It takes a lot of getting knocked down, and standing back up again to get in the music industry. So, instead of focusing on this as a travesty, and putting all your energy into punishing those responsible. look at is as a step in the very crucial act of getting a thick skin. If she does not intend to pursue singing, and just wanted the glory, have her learn a show stopper in her vocal range, and one she can actually sing. Enter her in a bunch of other things, until she wins. If she is as good as "you" think she is, I'm sure eventually you will come across something that is not "rigged." Most importantly, teach her that she has talents and gifts apart from singing/acting etc..that way, if it doesn't go anywhere, she won't feel like a failure, with nothing to offer anyone. There are singers that are more talented than the most successful singers of our time, but they will never be known, because it is all comes to chance, not just talent. If it was based on talent, Brittany Spears would be cleaning bathrooms at kmart. I think we should be pointing out people who do amazing charity work, or who sacrifice so much for the good of others, instead of how pretty someone is, or how famous they are. It leaves a lot of little girls feeling very hollow, when they can't live up to what they don't realize is just an mirage put out by an advertising agency.

I hate that all fairs are now wasting a night of grandstand entertainment on (Insert County Name Here) Idol. NOBODY cares about these competitions except for those entered and their families/friends. If I wanted to hear these hacks, I would go hang in the local corner karaoke bar on a Saturday night. Bring on Mel Tillis, Williams & Ree, Paul Revere & the Raiders or even Foghat instead of this karaoke garbage.

Whatever...you folks were not present for the performances so you would not know. I know there is one true and living God and Jesus is His Son and my child is not either one of them. I know that the truth will always manifest itself. I am not happy with the discrimination that was perpetrated against my child and I still maintain I am no stage mom... my child is very gifted and it is true that save one child from Elkhorn that sang "American Girl", the rest of the performances (except my child's) were not well executed. Her not making it into the finals had less to do with talent and more to do with a whole lot of other things that have nothing to do with talent. You jumping to conclusions without having been there is one more example of the bigotry of which I speak.

Sheri wrote a letter to editor of the Delavan Enterprise August 21st issue. It seems she entered her daughter in the Walworth Co Jr Idol Contest which she didn't win. In her letter she talks about it being rigged , discrimination and an outrage that should be investigated.Even called the President of the Fair Board who didn't want to talk about it. And ends up saying "my daughter was the only child, save one other, who did not give an ear-splitting horrible performance".
Think we all can see what's going on here.

I love the Walworth County Fair! So much to see and a great atmosphere with the little park still a haven in the center! Fairs are a time for families to enjoy themselves, not a reason for people to complain. If you don't like the fair, don't go!

Sour grapes is not the case, trust me. I am privy to information that you are not so I will overlook your comments because they were made in a well meaning way. In any competition preferential treatment is unacceptable and not becoming the conduct that should be expected from any person in a position of authority. I am glad that you had a good experience with the Walworth County Fair. I did not and I feel I have the right to voice that without personal attacks on my child's suspected lack of talent or abilities.

Sherri, I believe you were the one who started out confrontational by calling the judges bigots. When you start off the blog like that, the first thing many people think is "sour grapes." My kids have entered a wide variety of projects and animals, both good and bad, and were judged appropriately. We don't know anyone on the board, and have not lived in the county all that long. If kids that belong to Walworth County 4-H get a little preferential treatment, so what? It is the "Walworth County" fair after all.

Unfortunately it is also a destination for bigots who do not judge certain competitions based on talent but on what county you reside in and who you know that sits on the board. Also your appearance. I will never attend this fair again. Thank God I had the good sense to send my kids to the Rock County Fair this year. It's a shame too because my family has attended this fair for many years but Walworth County burned my kid and that is the last opportunity they will ever have to do that to my family. What a sad group.
