Census shows minorities will be in majority by 2050

Today’s minority groups will add up to 54 percent of America by the year 2050, thanks largely to Hispanics, and the nation will be substantially grayer, thanks mainly to aging baby boomers.

In fact, population projections released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau show the non-Hispanic white population, estimated to be 200 million in 2008, will grow only to 203 million by 2050. During the same period, the Hispanic population will nearly triple to 133 million, almost a third of the projected U.S. population of 439 million in 2050, due to both births and continued immigration. The census projects the Hispanic percentage of the population will grow from 16 percent in 2010 to more than 30 percent by 2050.

The trend of a growing Hispanic population is reflected in Rock County. Hispanics made up 5.8 percent of the population in 2006, up from 3.9 percent in 2000, according to the U.S. Census.

But the percentage of blacks in Rock County declined slightly in that time period, from 4.6 percent in 2000 to 4.4 percent in 2006.

Nationwide, the number of whites will begin declining in the 2030s, according to the census, as white deaths outpace births. By 2050, deaths among whites will outnumber births by nearly 600,000. Nearly 65 percent of the population in 2010, whites will drop to 46 percent of the nation’s population by 2050.

The percentage of non-Hispanic blacks in the nation, however, will remain essentially flat. According to the estimates, the black percentage of the population will drop from 12.2 percent in 2010 to 11.8 percent by 2050. But Asian percentage of the population will grow from 4.5 percent in 2010 to almost 8 percent in 2050.

Baby boomers will be senior citizens by 2030, and the ranks of older Americans will reach new highs. About one of every eight residents was 65 or older in 2008. Nearly one in five will be by 2030. The number of seniors will reach 88.5 million by 2050, up from 38.7 million in 2008. Seniors 85 and older will see their numbers more than triple, rising from 5.4 million in 2008 to 19 million in 2050.

The “working-age” population of 18 to 64, however, is expected to drop from 63 percent of the population in 2008 to 57 percent by 2050. Fifty-five percent of that working-age population will comprise minority groups in 2050, according to census estimates, a 21 percentage point increase from 2008. More than 30 percent of the working-age population will be Hispanic in 2050.

The white population in 2050 will skew significantly older, with a median age of almost 45, up from 41 in 2010. The median age of Hispanics is projected to be 31 in 2050, up from 27.5 in 2010. Only 13 percent of the Hispanic population is projected to be 65 or older in 2050, compared with 25.5 percent of the white population.

How about this. Seeing that what most people consider the illegals are from mexico I offer two sugestions. Deportation..? Sounds nice but whats to stop them from just comming back? How about we kick it up a notch and add something to make it a bit more costly to them and also help with the growth rate of hispanics versus whites? If illegals are caught we send them back thru a sterillisation clinic...hhmmm? Prevents them from comming back and having babies, and might make them think about comming in the first place. Option two would be a huge constuction project making a tunnel from the Mexican border to like Canada, or England. We could leave it unguarded and put cots and food/water supplies along the way. That way some other country can deal with the "Problem" Now this comment is posted for entertainment puposes only, as I have many hispanic friends. Oh but before I go. Go Whitey.

Janesville is so out of touch! White skined people in states like Texas, New Mexico, Arizona have been the minority for years and years now! Back in the 1980's my cousin who lives in Texas tryed to get a job in a factory but he was told that company already had it's quota of minorities (whites), so the job went to a mexican immigrant. Welcome to reality WI!

Is it really that upsetting? I, personally, do not care if I'm part of the "minority". I don't particularly care for that term, come to think of it. If you have such a problem with being a "minority", consider what it has been like for the races dubbed "minority" so far. I'm interested in knowing what impact, exactly, being in the "minority" is going to have on your/others lifestyle? Where does this fear stem from?

So.... maybe I missed it, but where in this article does it mention illegal Mexican aliens overtaking the country to steal your jobs and welfare?

Most of you so concerned with the illegal issue, would probably also try to make the argument that minorities have it great in this country; and would laugh at the idea of "white privilege". That being said; why is the idea of switching roles Armageddon to you?

Ironic, but hardly surprising.

If you really think our Hispanic population is the most important and influential issue facing this country today - you really need to turn off Foxnews; become a little more informed than a circus chimp; and more than likely - find a hobby.

Once again, some people are on the racist soap box and also referring to the very distant past (by the way I wasn't alive during the Indian days). I already said let people be here with the process and legality. That's not good enough? What kind of peace do you think will exist in this country (for anyone) if the lack of structure continues. We will then all pay for the mess. I am concerned about the American structure. Not a specific color of skin! Many of you commenting continue to stray from the main focuses. Illegals are not abidng by the same lines as others...no debating it. What about those who did come via legal process. Should they accept the massive undocumented influx? If it continues there will be a serious problem, and the lets hold hands and be friends thinking won't matter. The political borders and due processes are a good thing, not racist or wrong. I don't understand the constant debate. If America suffers too much from the maylay, then everyone will suffer anyway. Hot buttons empty can rattling words like "humanity" just deflect from the point. The law must be followed..............................

To those who were commenting on how the Europeans treated the Native Americans, it isn't like any other group of humans with technological/tactical/organizational superiority behaved much differently when arriving in an area populated with a different group. Look at the Mongols, the Zulus, the Saxons, the Aztecs et cetera, et cetera.

It seems to be human nature and there is little benefit to the "mea culpa" of white guilt constantly thrown about when discussing the European colonization of North America.

We need to decide if maintaining the cultural identity of the United States is first, something we want to do, second, something we have the ability to do and third, something we have the stomach to do.

The culture of Central and South America is different than that of traditional "American" culture.

The immigrants of today seem less interested in assimilating and adopting the dominant culture than changing the dominant culture to one more in line with the values of their homelands. Is this something we want to encourage or discourage? Is this a course we can even alter at this point? If we can alter it, are we willing to take the steps needed to do so?

intrigued: Are you kidding me? Do you really think that all illegal’s get paid above board? A large portion of them get paid in cash. In addition, when they make a purchase they pay local sales tax, but no federal tax. Since they are illegal, don’t get paid above board, and nobody essentially knows they exists, there is no way to collect federal tax from them. The consumption tax would guarantee they pay federal taxes.

Racism doesn't help anything or anyone. I don't care if you have purple skin and a pink mohawk. I do care if your driving without a license and insurance, if we are all paying 3% on the electric bill for utility welfare, or any welfare for that matter. (If you don't believe in utility welfare, read your electric bill carefully.)

The Mexican people that are coming to the U.S. legally or illegally are coming here for better jobs, better pay, better education, and a better life. If you were in their position, you would do the same.

In a few hundred years, there will be no "races" left, just humans like now but without the racism, so let's speed up the process and save a bunch on taxes now.

Everyone chip in 5 bucks, and we can buy Mexico, or better yet proclaim there are "Weapons of Mass Destruction", and just invade. The (31) states of Mexico will become the 51st thru 81st United States of America. Most of the Mexican people will approve of becoming part of America. The minority that does not approve are the ones that have been feeding off of the majority. I think the minority that benefits from the work of the majority are known as politicians, (parásito) there too.

There are many benefits for everyone:

$$$ Disband the Border Patrol and N.I.S. (Southern Branch). They cannot keep out illegals anyway, but spend something in the neighborhood of half a billion dollars annually.

$$$ Send in the American oil companies, we are presently importing an incredible 70% of our oil !!!

$$$ Deserts are great places to build solar and wind farms.

$$$ Warm, winter, ocean-side vacations without a passport.

$$$ Natural resources, and jobs to go with them.

Don't hate Mexican people because they want to work and/or live in the United States.

A special note for all you 7th grade alumni out there. Mexican people are not Spanish, they speak Spanish. People from Spain are Spanish.

How is it that you believe immigrants don't pay taxes? When you have a job, they take it right out of your check. When you make a purchase, you pay the sales tax. None of these tax paying activities require legal status apparently. Illegals who get jobs are generally using fake/stolen/etc. social security numbers which the government is only too happy to use to collect its taxes and social security. In fact, I have seen it argued that illegal immigrants are helpful to the social security system since they are paying in but generally do not collect.

I guess I would have less of a problem with illegal immigrants if we were assured they paid a fair share of taxes, which would then be used to help pay their burden on local governments. This is why I support a consumption tax versus our current system. As a result, everyone who buys anything would pay a tax. In addition, those who have the most money to spend would pay the most tax. However, the overall result would be that everyone would pay taxes regardless so of their legality. Obviously there would be some details that would need to be worked out, but anything would be less complicated then our current tax system. Hopefully by 2050 ethnicity wouldn’t be an issue anymore and no one would receive preferential treatment.

I was told by two landlords that it is preferable to rent to illegal immigrants rather than most people born and raised in America because of one fact: The illegal immigrants were much more likely to pay their rent each month due to their illegal status and fear of being reported. I also realize that there is a "illegal" issue in this country, but I am not for the deportation roundups. There has to be a better way. And, I don't think these people come here to just "rape" our country. They are looking for a better life for themselves and their children.

Truecitizen: I find this statement of yours: "It's all about truthfullness and reality." to be an example of your lack of understanding of the situation. The corporate world (particularly agriculture and hospitality) is recruiting individuals from other countries in order to maintain their businesses. Our government looks the other way. It is outrageous to simply point fingers at the immigrants who come here when our government is complicit in the breaking of the very immigration laws they create.

I too believe all immigrants should be here legally. But until agribusiness and tourism are no longer allowed to pay off our legislators, I doubt that any serious examination of who is here, why and whether or not they are necessary to our economy will happen.

Good point and that is a truthful statement. Just understand why so many are getting frustrated. And that frustration needs to be answered by the Government I think. I also think if landlords and employers only took in the immigrants that were legal status, then the situation would resolve itself and immigrants could take part in the "American dream". The census projection would also moderate too, don't you think? But enough of my input for one day!

I agree that immigrants need to abide by the law and follow the necessary steps to become citizens. I think that too often the American public assumes that all immigrants are "illegals" and are here to "rape the country" as Lydia so eloquently puts it. This simply is not the case. Illegal aliens are a huge problem, but they do not create the whole "minority" population.

Can we continue making the analogy to the pre-american days of Indians? Obviously immigration was apart of building America, and those who keep proclaiming "haters!" are missing the point completely. People coming here need to be processed legally and the influx needs to be more acceptable for the nation to bare it. Let me ask you then: Does America need to keep picking up after these other nations? Where's the outcry for those country's failures to their own people? Many illegal immigrants continue to send all of their money back home. I thought they wanted to be 'Americans'. It's all about truthfullness and reality. Your either in or your out. Part of the solution or your the problem. My family has only been in America for three generations, and we have never been part of the problem.

I have no problem with people wanting to be Americans. However if it is not done through the set process, then it is harmful. Thus the "illegal" status. Many of the hispanic and some other nationalities, are not legal status. This is very wrong and harmful to this nation's political and economical, as well as social status and structure. Unfortunately, this "by 2050" news article does not point out another fact, this country may not even exist by then, if the influx is not corrected. Our system will eventually break down if naturalization processes aren't followed. It's not about race, it's about national integrity. Integrety can be made with all types of people involved. The article wasn't about that subject, but it is obviously connected, and we should all be very concerned about the country's future.

Hey Lydia,
When our ancestors came here, how many of them learned the Native American languages that inhabited the land? Did yours? Mine didn't. Speaking of "rape" perhaps you'd feel more comfortable using that term if you took a history lesson and discovered what our ancestors did to the Native American Indians when they showed up.
I understand you're obviously frustrated with immigrants, and that's your right. It just seems awfully convenient for you to post blogs slamming the impact of other cultures on America when our impact on the original inhabitants of this land was far more devastating.
