Dog park committee hits its goal
MILTON Milton residents could be playing with their pooches in their very own dog park this fall.
A city committee has reached its goal for phase one of the dog park, thanks in large part to a $10,000 grant from Spacesaver Corp. in Fort Atkinson.
“It kind of makes me proud that our committee and Todd (Schmidt, city administrator) and everyone pulled together,” said Ryan Peterson, committee chairman. “By all means, it’s a team effort.”
The city has been talking about a dog park since it started plans to develop Crossridge Park eight years ago. But it abandoned plans for a dog park there when the YMCA expressed interest in developing the park.
Though its name didn’t change, the Ad Hoc Crossridge Park Committee now is planning a dog park on an 18-acre patch of land near John Paul Road and Vincent Street. It kicked off a fund-raising campaign in late 2007, starting with:
-- $5,000 from Air Products.
-- $5,000 from the city’s park development fund.
-- $1,000 from the Milton Community Fund.
The committee raised the rest of its $30,000 goal through individual donations and fund-raisers such as an annual dog walk.
Spacesaver Corp, donated $10,000 through an employee grant program sponsored by the Theodore W. Batterman Family Foundation, according to a news release issued by the city Monday. The program considers requests from Spacesaver employees—in this case, Peterson’s wife, Rae Peterson.
The committee hopes to fence in an area for large dogs sometime this fall, Peterson said. Phase one also includes a second fenced area for small dogs.
That timeline might hinge on a land sale between the city and two power companies.
Progress on the dog park was delayed this spring when Wisconsin Power & Light and Alliant Energy asked to buy land in the park to expand its nearby substation. The proposal would involve the sale of about 1.5 acres to the companies, including about half an acre from the dog park, Schmidt has said.
The city still is working on the details of the proposal and hopes to have it sorted out in the next month or two, Schmidt said.
Meanwhile, the committee will continue raising money for phase two, expected to include a playground, parking lot and dog agility/training course. Peterson estimated the cost of phase two at $15,000.

Jelous? You mean Jealous? You have us pegged. We are jealous all right. I bet your kids think highly of your soap watching, playing on the computer and conducting repetitive daily affirmations to convince your inner-self of your "princess" label is quality time. You should think about adopting a dog from the humane society. At least they would have someone to spend some true quality time with while you are preoccupied flaunting your "princess life" to us. Soon your children will go to publically funded schools that we all pay for through taxes. When they get to school, our tax-supported teachers can correct the years of damage create by allowing your children to see you use coordinating conjunctions to start 50 word, run-on laden sentences meant to trash a good project.

Negative0neWithTooMuchTimeOnHisHands, aka Optimism, you are up to averaging 3 posts a day now. 2 posts a day for 4 months straight is excessive! It is the same as 150 posts over the course of 2 days or 300 on one. Remember, that is only the average if I we assume, for your benefit, that you post every day for 120+ days. Spend some time with your kids and stop ruining a good thing for the other 50% with dogs.

Optimism, children came into this by comments in the first few entries. If you read them you will be well informed. If you don't, you will sound like you do now. How do I know if taking my kid to the playground is safe with all of the other kids' temperaments? You don't until you try. Kids with bad temperaments do not last long at a childs park, likewise a dog with a bad temperament does not last long at a dog park.
You mention a dog is allowed in the parks designed for children, baseball, and such. Most parks these days restrict dogs from being in the park. People still take them, but it is an increasingly popular way to regulate animals out of parks. Do you know that 99.9% of all cities require a dog to be on a leash at all times? Did you know that leash must be 8' or less in most cases? Tell me, do you keep your child on a 8' or leash at the park? Why then is it a bad idea to have a designated area for dogs without restrictions or leashes? I hope you answer those questions with reason and common sense. The whip cream and cherry are that donations and volunteers are apparently saving you from paying higher taxes to create this pet playground. If you are a citizen of Milton, you have paid to mow this area for years, and will continue to do so from my understanding of what I read.
Why should people pay for the upkeep of a city park? Because it benefits large numbers of people. Why do seniors have to pay taxes to keep up children's parks? Why do we pay fund senior centers? The answer is the same. No park will satisfy all, but most try to cover a majority. If you do not like it, do not go. Trust me, we will not miss you!

Yes, I have kids, and they do stay in my yard, without a shock collar, my kids are well behaved and don't need abuse to encourage behavoir. And when they do venture out into the public, I pay for the activities they enjoy, including parks that my tax dollars pay to help keep up, and where dogs are also WELCOME!! I certainly wouldn't be able to take my child to a dog park where god only knows the temperments of these animals. We all have different opinions, and I respect that, I did humble myself by stating I don't like dogs, so that is my reason for being against this, but why on earth would CHILDREN need to be brought into this?? People have babies, babies become children, and children become adults...who supply funds for all of these demands. OF COURSE children should be taken care of. WHAT DOES A DOG do for society??

Optimism doesn't sound very optimistic. Weird. Anyway, this park is nothing but good for Milton and the surrouding areas. People need to stop being so negative about developments like this and start supporting these good causes. A park like this means that both dogs and families can socialize even more, and that is never a bad thing. This is a definite sign that Milton is changing for the better. Are you kidding me? A DOG PARK? Come on, we all have yards for our dogs to play at. A dog park is something you should only see in New York City for the people who live twenty stories up, and can afford to build their OWN dog park. This is just plain silly. And if the argument is that your puppy needs another puppy to play with, make friends with someone with a puppy. Milton needs a dog park just as bad as Sharon needs an ethonal plant.

Whatever536, what? You do not make sense. Again, get acquainted with a story before you comment. It is a city park, on city land, built by volunteers, with donated monies. I talked to Linda Clark at last years dog walk and she said the city already mowed this area before the park was ever begun. After the park is built it will remain a city park and be taken care of like any other park. A park is a park. Maybe they will place one of those donation boxes for donations from users. I think what is important is a broad group of people from all over the area, out of state, and residents of Milton will all have a really nice park to use.

Looks like Wahoo and 536 need to get off the computer and spend some time with their kids. They are getting spanked in this blog. Who said it was not a park for kids? While you type your anger out on your computer, your kids could be at the dog park watching cute and cuddly dogs run around having fun. It would certainly be less boring than waiting for dad to get off the computer and spend some time with them. See, the park is for everyone! Dog owners, people that are unable to have dogs, and kids with nothing to do beside watch dad complain about things they have no knowledge of can all use the park. The dads, wahoo and whatever536, can use it too. If you use it to babysit your bored kids it still counts as using it. And to think it didn't even cost you a dime in taxes. Now we need one in my town for my kids. While I would like one in our neck of the woods, I will opt for exiting the computer now so that I can spend some time with my kids.

I never thought I would be drawn into commenting on a blog, but there is a first time for everything. I think there are so many great features with this park. Here are a few I walk away with:
-beautiful nature area
-trails for exercising
-restored prairies
-valuable wetlands
-wooded areas for bird protection
-ice age trail across the street
-milkweed for endangered monarch butterfly
None of the aforementioned have anything to do with kids or dogs. That alone should be enough to get you appreciate this park. I do not have a dog. I do recognize the added benefit for those that do. What a wonderful place to let the pup run about. I do not have any young children, and am glad at this point in my life I am allowed to enjoy some time for myself doing things many young children do not enjoy. If I had a small child, the addition of the playground would appeal to me. My point is YOU may not be able to see this park as anything other than a park for dogs, but it is apparent from the comments that YOU have too narrow scope of view. If nothing else, the entire community of Milton benefit from another park. Not all parks need to be traditional. Expand your definition of park and you will expand your definition of the your typical park user. How do you think I feel when they build a new park with a bunch of baseball diamonds? Get the drift?
I have one comment to the sourpuss that said in so many words he thought it was a poor use of funds. In the previous article Mrs. Vogel reported this was a park funded by donations. After checking the total collected, the cost of the park, and the donors listed I do not see any tax money funding the efforts. Maybe in your spare time you could read up on topics you have little to no knowledge of. Instead of commenting just to comment you could spend some time appreciating life. I echo the person that said it is not all about you!

People with no children are forced to pay taxes for public schools. Amoung other services taxpayers already pay for other people's children. So, what is the big deal to have a park for dogs paid for by donations?? I'm sick of paying for other people children and the parents lack of responsibility. I make donations to the ASPCA. I am very glad to see something for the animals and the loving humans that care for them. To many people their pets are a member of the family. Let them have something to enjoy with them. Take your kids to the many other parks and find something better to whine about.

I appreciate it's value already! It looks very nice out there. I live in the country and can appreciate the efforts to have a natural area in the city. Anyone can appreciate nature. Neighborhood kids will enjoy the playground. Personally, I will enjoy a walk in the park for the heck of it even though I am unable to have a dog. Did you ever think of someone like me? Put yourself in someone else's shoes! Other people can have just as much enjoyment watching as anyone else does playing with their dogs. My mother used to think that way. Now she takes me to the park in Johnson Creek. With gas prices the way they are it is harder to do on our limited budget. I am not able to have a dog anymore, but I look forward to taking trips to the park to see other dogs at play. What more could you ask for? Anyone that has been past this gem of a park would know that the area was a wasted space that looked like an area around a landfill littered with passerby's trash. Now, it is a joy to look at. Mr. whatever536, I hope you are not being sarcastic. If you are you need to see what a great thing this for the community. I just wish I could help the individuals responsible for this wonderful idea. I hope that they make a way for those that have a wheelchair to get into the fenced area. It does not have to be paved, but if it is a compacted surface it makes it much easier on the hands. Johnson Creek has shredded wood in many areas and I am able to move around on this just fine. It does not cost a lot of money either.
