— The driver and passenger of a motorcycle, which was pursued by Beloit Township police before crashing, were flown to hospitals in Madison and Rockford, Ill., for treatment after an early morning accident.

Rock County Sheriff’s Office deputies found Ronald S. Miller, 21, of South Beloit, Ill., sitting in the grass on South Afton Road at the intersection of West B-R Townline Road at 1:19 a.m. Moments later, they discovered Tara Gatlin, 33, of Louisville, Ky., in a field west of the intersection.

Miller had been driving a motorcycle west on Townline Road when he failed to stop at the stop sign at the “T” intersection with South Afton Road, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office. The motorcycle, according to the investigation, then continued west and hit a metal fence gate throwing Miller and Gatlin, who were not wearing helmets, off the motorcycle.

Town of Beloit EMS took Miller to the Beloit Memorial Hospital. A short time later he was transferred to University Hospital, Madison, to be treated for head and right arm injuries.

Gatlin initially was treated by Beloit Fire Department paramedics then flown to St. Anthony Medical Center, Rockford, to receive treatment for her head and right leg injuries.

The pursuit by Beloit Township police before the accident was terminated as directed by the department’s policy, according to the sheriff’s office.

Miller was charged with injury by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle by the sheriff’s office. Charges by Beloit Township police are pending in light of the ongoing investigation.

Miller was listed in fair condition this morning at University Hospital, while Gatlin was listed in critical condition at St. Anthony Medical Center.

I am with the one who told everyone to get a life. How can anyone who does not know the poeple involved or the situation say anything. It was an accident it is not like this guy meant to put her or his own life in jeopardy. I personally know what it feels like for peole to judge you because of an accident because mywhole family and me were in one not to long ago and yes I was driving, not one day goes by that I dont think about what I did to my family. Thankfully we are all very lucky to be here today thank god but believe me the guy who was driving the motorcycle is living with this everyday and most likely feels like crap and probably thinks he deserves what happened to him if not more just like I do. So just leave him alone with all the negative comments because like I said NO ONE knows how he feels only he does.

sunshine34 He was intoxicated what do you NOT understand about this???? Maybe you need to learn about the case instead of acting like the know it all...is the drunk driver related to you or something....there is zero tolerance for driving drunk...let alone injuring someone...fleeing the police....running stop signs....speeding....or even killing someone...grab a book and look into the charges...he wont just get a slap on the hand. STOP making others seem like the bullies...he was the "DRUNK DRIVER" and I hate people who DRINK AND DRIVE....don't care who they are...they drive drunk and KILL!!!!!! Hope they throw the book at him and I don't care what the FAMILY has been through...go check on girl in COMA and see how her family is doing.. final word "DON'T FRIGGIN' DRINK AND DRIVE" FLEE POLICE, RUN STOP SIGNS, AND FLY THROUGH INTERSECTIONS ON A MOTORCYCLE (CROTCH ROCKET MORE LIKELY) WITH A WOMAN ON BACK OF IT...nothing more to say except pray for woman that is laying in hospital still...she is the ONE I feel for and HER family...not the drunk that caused this.

OK ONE...DO YOU KNOW THE DAMN ALCOHOL LEVEL...NO. DO YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS WHOLE THING...NO! YOU NEED TO SERIOUSLY THINK ABOUT THIS MANS FAMILY BEFORE YOU SPEAK. THEY ARE HURTING TOO...NOT JUST FOR HIM BUT FOR THE GIRLS FAMILY TOO. THIS MAN KNOWS HE MADE A MISTAKE SO STOP BASHIN HIM JUST TO GET YOUR DAILY DOSE OF HAPPINESS. AND I KNOW FOR A FACT...THE MAN DIDNT DRAG HER ONTO THE BIKE. ANYONE THAT EVEN SITS ON A BIKE KNOWS THAT THERE IS A CHANCE OF GETTING INTO A ACCIDENT...JUST LIKE GETTING INTO A CAR. YOU NEED TO SERIOUSLY SHUT UP AND THINK ABOUT THE FAMILIES!!!! NOT JUST YOU WHO GETS A HIGH OFF OF BASHING PEOPLE!!!

This isnt a site to bash people who have done something wrong. EVERYONE MAKES A MISTAKE and sadly this is a REALLY big mistake...but Im sure he understands that. If you pray for anyone it should be BOTH of them. They are both injured...yes she is worse off...but prayer is strong...so pray for BOTH! and Zann...you obviously dont know wtf is going on! Im sure he didnt drag her on the bike...it was her descion too! And whatever he gets Im sure he will face head on. Where is the humanity in this world gone. Don't you think this man knows what he's done? Don't you think he's going to live with this the rest of his life? Shame on all of you. None of us has seen a blood alchol level yet. Know one has even interviewed the family of the passenger, or the driver. We know only what's been feed to us by the newspapers. I know people who have been affected by lies the newspapers have told to sell papers. But the truth comes out in the end. And to "sunshine34" you said that "you don't care what the familys going through..."? What kind of person are you! A mistake like this affects every one around them. So I pray for that familys. You are probably that one person that hears a rumor in the office, and runs to tell anyone who will listen even when you don't know if its true or not! I think everyone should relax, and pray for ALL involved. Compassion people. Now is when it's needed the most!

This is weird. I know this woman. I've known Tara for many years and she went up there to see her family and met this guy. She had no prior relationship with him until hours before this happened. She didn't know he was intoxicated or she probably would have never agreed to ride with him. She certainly didn't know he was going to run from the police while she was on the back of his bike. Not wearing a helmet is dumb, but this had nothing to do with her. She is not stupid and not evil. Everyone down here has been worried sick about her and we have heard that she is ok and is suspected to survive which is miracle in itself. I know the extent of her injuries and this is going to take years to get her back to her normal wonderful self. I hate this has happened to her but don't refer to her as if she asked for it. She's going to live... just be happy for her and hope to god he goes to jail for what he has done to her.

You dont kno what the familys have been through. i think they kno what happened and dont need your intake on how the driver shouldnt of done this or that. no one cares. Thing is...the police said they NEVER turned on their lights...so how was there a "chase"?
They were not even a mile away from the place they started...so there couldnt of been a HIGH SPEED chase if the cop that saw them first never even saw the crash. The cops also said that they didnt even know about the "chase" and that the two on the bike were VERY lucky they found them!

k-dawg,

"Miller had been driving a motorcycle west on Townline Road when he failed to stop at the stop sign at the “T” intersection with South Afton Road, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office."

It sounds to me like this was a press release from the Sheriff's Department...since it says that it was. I don't think they make up stories.

I'm sure the Sheriff's Department did know about the motorcycle chase, since they have police radio's and heard of the Township chase. Beloit Township and the Rock County Sheriff's Department border one another and it's very lucky that the deputy found them when he did.

I don't condone theft, but I would suggest to snag one of those blinking yellow lights, mount it to a pole and stick it in the ground. Heck, even make a nice sign too. Obviously, the county (or whoever) doesn't care about this, but you do. Take matters into your own hands.

The media is NEVER right with any of the stories they EVER talk about. One...I bet all you people dont even know where they started from. They started not even a mile away from the crash site. Two...police dont chase people on bikes just for this reason. They dont want people to get like this. Three...the cop that found them WASNT the cop that was behind him. It was a total different cop that didnt even know about the "chase" as they call it!

Media needs to check these things first before making people look like a bad person.

They also need to take in consideration of the families of both of them. They are going through enough they dont need to be all worked up over lies from the media.

Chases are usually stopped by police because the vehicle is wanted for traffic only, they have the plate, and environmental issues, such as population, speed, road conditions, and traffic volume make it to dangerous for the general public.

Wrong Pat, it's the idiots who drive the vehicles while intoxicated who think of nobody but themselves. As usual, peeps found a way to use this article to bash all motorcyclists. Well guess what, sober people in safe little cars with seat belts get killed by other motorists, so I guess when they decided to get behind the wheel of their car, they were only thinking of themselves? The stereotyping in these blogs are just ridiculous. I almost feel sorry for the passenger, although she couldn't control what her driver was doing, she could control getting on the back of that bike with an intoxicated person.
