Favre flies under radar in Green Bay

By ASSOCIATED PRESS  Monday, Aug. 4, 2008

— There was no parade, no motorcade, and no photo opportunity—hardly the way you’d expect Brett Favre to return to the Green Bay Packers after spending most of the past month as the league’s longest-running daytime drama.

If Favre did report to the Packers as expected Monday, none of the fans and media members staking out several entrances to Lambeau Field managed to catch a glimpse of him.

And while a team security official told a few hundred fans gathered near the entrance to the players’ parking lot that Favre already was in the building shortly after he was expected to report at noon, Packers officials weren’t immediately available to confirm that Favre was present.

The team announced Monday afternoon that Favre had been reinstated and returned to the Packers’ active roster, as was expected. To make room for Favre, the team placed cornerback Condrew Allen on injured reserve with a knee injury.

Coach Mike McCarthy had scheduled a news conference for 8:30 p.m. to talk about his plans for Favre. But the news conference was called off because McCarthy was still meeting with Favre.

Meanwhile, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell ruled Monday that he found no violations of league policy in the Packers’ tampering complaint against Minnesota Vikings. And Minnesota coach Brad Childress denied reports that the Vikings have talked to the Packers about a potential trade for Favre.

“We haven’t had any contact” with the Packers, Childress said.

Vikings coaches apparently did have contact with Favre in the offseason, but Goodell found that their conversations didn’t violate league tampering rules. In a statement, Goodell said, “None of those conversations suggest that Favre was soliciting a job or that other teams were soliciting his services.”

In a statement, the Packers said they consider the matter closed.

“Based on the information that we had, the Packers thought it was appropriate to bring this matter to the league’s attention,” the team said. “We respect the commissioner’s investigation of this matter and we now consider it closed.”

Vikings officials said they respected the “thoroughness” of the investigation.

“We provided the league with all information requested so they could be comprehensive in their decision making,” the Vikings said in a statement. “Our focus has been, and continues to be, on our football team and having a successful season.”

After being reinstated and added to the Packers’ active roster, Favre was to take a physical examination and conditioning test.

The Packers reluctantly embraced Favre’s forced return to the football field Sunday, after failing to come to a financial agreement that would manage to make Favre happy while staying retired.

And while it’s not yet clear what role Favre will play for the Packers, current quarterback Aaron Rodgers says he’s ready for a potential competition with Favre after serving as his backup for three seasons.

“I know if they do open it up to competition, not a lot of people give me a chance, but I believe in myself and I’m going to be the best I can be and let coach decide from there,” Rodgers said Sunday night.

As the Favre saga continues to take unexpected twists and turns, the Packers apparently are turning to an expert in crisis management: Former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer.

Fleischer gave a lecture to Packers players last week about media relations—an event that was scheduled before Favre got the so-called “itch” to play again—but the team apparently thought highly enough of Fleischer’s advice that they decided to keep him around.

“Can’t you tell?” McCarthy quipped Sunday night, after he was asked about a foxsports.com report that the Packers were employing Fleischer for one month as a consultant.

“I don’t know the specifics,” McCarthy said. “If he is, I might go see him when I’m done here.”

Since leaving the White House, Fleischer has gone on to become president of Ari Fleischer Sports Communications, a joint venture with IMG. Last week, Fleischer told The Associated Press that he discussed the Favre situation with Packers players.

“Obviously, it’s a topic, and it wasn’t ignored,” Fleischer said.

No, Favre is doing this to himself. The Packer's image isn't being tarnished by this. McCarthy and Thompson have been very flexible throughout this whole ordeal. Fact of the matter is, because of what Favre said, they told Rodgers he would be the starter and he would be the Packer's QB. How messed up would it be to go back on that promise? Favre is acting like a spoiled brat! At least Thompson and McCarthy are keeping their composure and doing the responsible thing.

You all must be sitting in on all these NFL meetings to know so much valid information. OMG lot's of people are suffering from loved ones being ill, confusion etc.....it doesn't entitle them to A JOB THOUGH or AUTOMATIC sympathy or respect. I respect all of your passion for this man, but you really shouldn't force your feelings down others throats, when that is all they are is your opinions, all people are entitled to their own opinions, and unless your truths are universal truths, there is no right to force others to jump on your wagon.

I remember one man who was talking with ESPN (apparently he's well known, I don't watch ESPN too much though), spoke about how after Favre retired, Favre called him and left a message. In the message Favre specifically said something along the lines of, "I'm not being pressured into this. No one is trying to force me to retire. This is my own decision, I just don't have the heart to play any more."
The man talking to ESPN said he has played the tape to several people, and everyone agreed that Favre sounded 100% sincere.
°
If you ask me, Favre just got upset that he couldn't get what he wanted (because he waited too long) and now he wants to look like the victim. Why should I have pity for him? Why is it that everyone says this has been a one sided story from the start, when most people are taking Favre's side? Favre even did an interview on Fox. Surely you can't say that was spun in favor of the Packer's head coach and general manager. Favre was a good man, but this little incident has ruined him.

Anyone that worship a professional athlete as many do Brett Favre needs a reality check! I'm a "fan" of the QB Brett Favre. What he chooses to do with his career and life, I wish him the best, but, whatever path he chooses, life will still go on for people. I can appreciate the passion for a QB who played the game with more heart and soul than possibly anyone to ever lace up 'em up in the NFL. But, let's all keep it real here. Favre isn't God. He's just a man. Perspective is important in life!

Completely discraceful for the Packers to treat Favre that way. All the guy wanted was to play, so let him play without the childish media circus and trumpt-up "tampering" charges. I agree completely. He I think is very hurt. Look at everything he did for them. He gave up watching his girls grow up, not being able to be beside his wife the entire time she went through chemo. Let me tell you she must be one hexx because she has stuck by him. People who talk badly about Favre have no class. We don't know the whole story the Packer's have only put out there what they want us to know. NOT all the nasty things they have said and done behind closed doors. Thompson should be canned and I think he will be. The only thing that would save his job is if the Packers have as good a year this year as last. So no one can question anything. That is not going to happen. 80% of last years season was because of Favre. The Packer's organization has embarrassed the state of Wisconsin.

First I would like to say to everyone who is talking badly about Favre, you do not know what is going through his head nor are you in his shoes. Since this story broke it has been very one sided and have only heard comment from McCarthy and Thompson. We have yet heard from Favre himself and what his thought are too all of this. Favre supposedly did make a comment to ESPN last night saying that there has been a lot of damage done that he cannot forgive. He further said that a lot of stuff has been said and story's told that just are not true. Now I have been following this story from the beggining and remember McCarthy saying that he had been in touch with Favre since he retired because Favre was not sure if he made the right decision and McCarthy made the comment saying that the option was there if Favre changed his mind and wanted to come out of retirement. My gut feeling is saying that there is more going on than what they want us to know and in time we will eventually find out what that is. And if I remember correctly all Favre requested from the Packers was to be released from his contract, probably so if he decided to be reinstated he then was not tied down and could go wherever he wanted without making waves but the Packers refused. One last thing, Reggie White retired only to have second thoughts and asked to be reinstated which he was and played 1 more year with the Panther's yet after his death when he was entered into the hall of fame he was entered as a Packer. And yes I know, Favre has done this the last 3-4 seasons threatening retirement but I also understand especially with his wife having cancer and not knowing what her prognosis was going to be or the outcome.

I love Favre, but I will never place one player above an entire team. Bret has left the packers, and if it wasn't to retire, then he has lost almost all of the respect I had for him. He's a whiner. I thought he was a real man, but clearly he isn't. All he has been doing is pouting. He doesn't love football. If he loved football, he would have been content with coming in as a back up. The team would have given him a lot of playing time still. Bret has become a spoiled brat, and no spoiled brat will be my idol.
°
I honestly think that McCarthy and Thompson were trying to be as reasonable as they could be with Favre, while not allowing for the possibility of Rodgers to feel left out and useless.
°
Way to go Bret. Way to evolve from the example for professional athletes to emulate into the bad example of what not to become. There are very few professional athletes out there who still act professionally, and I thought that Favre was one of them. I thought wrong.

If I had season tickets which sorrowfully I don't (will hopefully move up further on the list tho after this fiasco) I would not even attend the first game of the season just to show my total disapproval for how this all was handled. As far as Favre going to the evil Vikings. Possible. If I were the Packers and serious about trading Favre and it had to be within the division, I'd take the lesser of the two evils and trade him to Chicago! Why not? The Bears are in disarray. Even with Favre, they aren't a threat to anyone because their offensive line is so bad and their WR's are no better than average at best. By trading him to the Bears, they keep him away from Minnesota who would pose a huge threat within the division. They are way closer to being a contender than Chicago!!! Plus, by trading him to the Bears, all the bitter Pack fans who have turned on Favre could have sweet revenge watching him get pulverized because the Bears O' line is so bad. It could be a win-win! What do you think??

From a business standpoint releasing Favre would have been a terrible decision. If they trade him at least they get something for him. I don't think he will be in Green Bay by the weekend.

I think that is what makes me so disgusted with the entire thing. Because it is about pride. Not who is better fit to be quarterback(we know who is.) Maybe Brett could have done things different. But he has the right to un-retire. He did not demand to play for the Packer's . He asked for a release. They refused. He called their bluff and asked to be reinstated. Now he is in GreenBay and probably will be traded to the evil Vikings anyway. When they decided they did not want him anymore they just should have released him. That would have been the end of it. But no lets drag it out for weeks, and weeks , and take a beating in the poll of public opinion. The Packers tried to keep him retired and that is just insulting. They do not have that right. Ted Thompson could have done a lot of things different and better. I hope he has his resume polished up, he will need it by the end of the season.

Thompson isn't exactly a bad GM! Thompson wasn't counting on Favre "unretiring" is where it starts. The Packers were ready to begin the "post Favre era". Favre put Thompson between a rock and hard place by asking for reinstatement to the league. Thompson knows Favre is the best man for the job. He knew if he just layed out the red carpet for Favre, it would send the message that he's not 100% confident in Rogers being the QB of the future for this team. He figured Favre was doing it for the money and tried to buy him out and it backfired. He may not like it, but, he knows Favre is going to be the QB this year and the Aaron Rogers plan is going to be on the backburner for another year. Thompson's problem right now isn't Favre, it's his pride. He doesn't have the guts or humility to go to Rogers and just tell him, Favre is playing and you're not! So, he insults the fans intelligence by announcing a QB competition between the two! That's like putting a Ferrari up against a Volkswagon!
Bottom line, Favre put Thompson on the spot and Thompson wasn't prepared to deal with it. It's a good short term thing for the Packers, but, it's going to set them back for the future. It's as simple as that.

I think Thompson thought he could bully Favre into doing what he wanted him to do. That is all Thompson is a bully. A horrible G.M. . So now they have hired a former white house press secretary to fix this p.r. nightmare. Start with firing Thompson. They can't fix it. The damage is done.

Farve is still in the top 5 of NFL quarterbacks. If he was not a threat and was really a has been, the team would have released him fully, and not offered 20 million dollars t stay retired. Ted Thompson is a buffoon to have allowed this media circus to happen. He left himself with no out to save face. Farve has to be traded or released in 24 hours or he will be the starting Quarterback by seasons opening.

Lots of nice statistics. Lots of nice hoping the Pack gets in the Super Bowl with Brettie Boy.

How about a little interigity? Apparently then name of the game is whiny football. Brett sits there while the media speculates his retirement this spring as well as the last couple of year. Brett decides to retire, nope, yep.. nope and finally yep.... ahh,, nope. I want to play again.

Does anyone care about real sportsmanship ? As long as the Pack can win the Super Bowl and Brett does it who the heck cares how it was done right?

He was tauted as this great guy...team player...dealt with all these problems and he still played...we all stood by him and NOW....." I WANT TO PLAY... NOW !! ". Do as I say.

What a slap in the face to his team, his fans, the Packer Corp.

What if YOUR KID was suppose to start on his team. And then,,, nope..sorry whiny britches wants to play now... he quit, we reeved up little Johnny YOUR KID to play ALL summer.. and boom. Sorry Brutis gets to play now. We care more about winning than honesty and integrity.
We teach the kids winning isn't everything don't we? The kids look up to guys like Farve. Now all they see if they complain loud enough they will get what they want. But only if you are "important" like Farve.

How sad there are no gentelman anymore in sports...

MGMgrand and other Favre-busters: It did not take Brett "years to get good". He came in for the injured Majkowski early in the 1992 season and the Packers went on to post 13 non-losing seasons in a row (their worst record being 8-8 in 1999), two Super Bowl appearances, and one Super Bowl win (Super Bowl XXXI). The Packers' 13 consecutive non-losing seasons was an active NFL record until the team finally suffered a losing campaign in its 2005 season though it returned to have an 8-8 season and just missed the playoffs in 2006. Last season, the team came up one victory short of advancing to the Super Bowl. Remember, every single one of these years featured Favre at the helm. Gosh, imagine that! I have absolutely nothing against Rodgers. I just wanted to set the record straight on Favre. Welcome home, Brett. Now let's play some football!!!!!!!

The only way this all has a happy ending is if the Pack starts Favre and the TEAM (not just Favre like he is the only one there) goes to the superbowl and wins it all. It really ticks me off that now the packers say they never said Farve would be a backup if he came back, that is BS! It's also BS that he can't decide if he wants to play or not, talk about being a hostage in the whole thing. What about the fans for the last 5 years of his coming or going?

O.K. the Packer's wanted to move on yet Murphy went to Brett three months ago trying to get him to come back. That was reported today. They have such faith in Rogers that they asked him to come back? I hope Rogers has something up his sleeve different than how he looked last night. The fact that they went to Brett three months ago makes one wonder how much faith they really have in Rogers.

Spanky - what do expect? The guy never plays. He sits on the sidelines game after game after game. Would expect him to throw 3 TD's in a row. He does not have the game experience....YET!!! You don't just automatically have that experience when you walk on the field. Favre was the same way when he started. It took years for him to get good.
-
By the way, Favre throws how many INT in a game? It is not uncommon for him to throw 3-4 INT in a single game. He is good, but not the best in the league.

Here is the other thing. Granted the Packers did not have a banner year last year (in other words get to the Super Bowl), Favre still had a great year. If he totally flops this year, then what will that look like? To come back from announcing a retirement, then having one the worst playing years ever. Yea that will be nice to leave then.

Trade talks are still open with other teams, just because they couldn't get him traded before reinstatement doesn't mean they won't keep trying. As of Friday evening, JS online reported that they are still in trade negotiations with Minnesota. The saga isn't over yet.

I still sense a "rat" in the wording of the Packer's organization press releases that Brett still may not be playing for the Green Bay Packer's this year. They sure know how to say open ended "words". It would be cruel of the Packer's to allow the Farve fans to get their hopes up to seeing him play again only to trade him & blame Farve.

They didn't bring Favre back for an open competition at QB! Get real here. I'm not a Packer fan and even I know Favre's one of the best ever. He had one of the best season's of his career last year. The Packers have allowed their ego to take over now. Favre called their bluff and didn't take the buyout and the Packers got burned at their own game. Now they're insulting the fans by informing them there will be an open competition between a Hall of Fame QB who still plays like one and an unproven QB who has been waiting his turn. The Packers need to be up front with Rodgers and tell him the truth. Favre is coming back, he's better than you are and ever will be and he's going to be the starter unless he's hurt. If Rodgers feelings get hurt, so be it! Then, they should put a gag order on Rodgers and have their PR guy do all the talking with the media to avoid distractions because the media will do everything they can now to provoke Rodgers to say something condescending regarding Favre and twist the story around to make Rodgers look like a tool. It is what it is! Favre gives the Packers the best chance to win NOW. That's the whole idea. If their intent isn't to win now, let #4 go and be done with it!

I think it is a crappy thing to do on the Packers part. They basically promised the job to Rodgers, and now they are telling him he has to fight for it. That is not right.
-
If they brought Favre back, it should have been the understanding he was going to be a backup only.
-
Now I know all you fans will say that is wrong. I am a Packer fan. I am a fan of the Packers no matter who they get as QB. Favre is just playing games. I hope they offer him the lowest salary they can.
