WCLO's Stan Stricker reports on Interim City Manager

RSS

— The Janesville City Council is planning to hire an interim city manager as it continues its search for a permanent replacement for retiring City Manager Steve Sheiffer.

“We did choose a candidate for interim city manager,” Council President Amy Loasching said. “We are working on a contract. After that is prepared by the city attorney, then I will approach the candidate.”

The decision was made during a closed session at Monday night’s meeting.

Loasching said she hopes the candidate can be named later this week, after she makes the offer to the candidate.

Loasching declined to say if the person is a city employee but said the person was chosen from among four candidates. None of the candidates has been a city manager, though the person selected has assistant city manager experience, she told WCLO radio.

She said the council didn’t go through an application process, and the candidates were considered through word-of-mouth recommendations from the community and council members’ experience working with people.

The contract will be for six months or until a new city manager is in place, whichever comes first, she said.

Sheiffer retires Sept. 5, and the council is working with the PAR Group, an Illinois recruiting firm, to select a second round of candidates.

Earlier this month, the council interviewed and rejected five finalists. Those finalists came from 39 applicants, and a sixth finalist dropped out before the interview process began.

A community panel and the city council interviewed the five candidates, and the council conducted second interviews with two finalists. But after a “healthy debate,” the council decided to renew the search.

Loasching said at the time that nothing specific eliminated either of the final two men from consideration, although she said both the council and the community panel were split on whom to choose.

I'm definitly guilty of misreading one of your earlier posts. Apologies there. But still, it's a matter of credibility. There'll be a moratorium on the use of the word in question. I haven't fully made up my mind on all this.

Post more info here or email me.

Interim is translated into: The guy or gal who’s going to take all the heat during this turbulent time so that we don’t ruin the career of the permanent city manager. Another translation is: A guy or gal who we can blame for the cities enormous impending problems. Shorter translation: Punching bag. Shortest translation is: Disposable. Where to I sign?

You are confused. I am a child of hers, making me a Briarmoon. If you would like a name for the membership of her delusional friends that follow her and rant against the city, please make a different selection. Don't imply her family supports her delusions by calling them the "B-moonies." That would imply that ALL the Briarmoon's agree with her - we don't. I personally don’t have rants against the City of Janesville I don’t live there.

banyon99, are you messing with me?! You acknowledge being a B'moonie but B'moon isn't your leader?

Is it that your irrational complaints against the city are irrational in a more respectable way? You need a new name for the membership.

I thought I was clear, but apparently not. She is not 'my leader'. I am 'one of them' but I didn't choose her to be my parent. Like I said, sling mud at her all you like, her actions are quite diserving of your ridicule. I, however, live my life in a very responsible manner, so please don't generalize and drag 'all the b-moonies' into your comments.

banyan99, I'm not following what you said. You're one of them but you reject what the leader is?

I didn't mention the mythical followers.

An Oswaldian is someone who wants to be worshipped as a great leader without being willing to interact with people in a healthy way;

or an Oswaldian is someone who wants to be worshipped as a great leader but lacks the skills required to participate in the give-and-take necessary to earn a position of true leadership.

You're kind of touchy given the methods of slander, libel, and defamation in question.

Wow, gazettefan, you just had to bring her up again? I think you have a thing for her.

I would appreciate in the future if you refrained from dragging 'all the b-moonies' into your comments and focused them instead on the responsible party, or irresponsible, as the case may be. While I’m sure 'all the b-moonies' have issues, we aren’t Oswaldian and aren’t really your concern. Please feel free to sling mud at Karen all you wish, but I’d appreciate if you left me out of it.

TR, Tom Rodgers, was an assistant city manager; you might be right MikeF. Who is SF?

I'm sure K.A.B. doesn't have a chance.

I don't think a careful and cautious hiring process is what counts as a fiasco. I'm not really sure what led the council to disqualify all prior candidates (statements were rather vague) and I'm not really sure what is being done to ensure a more appropriate pool this second round, but at least for the time being the city is going to be taken care of. This may actually ensure that the incoming candidates are aware that we are looking for a long tenure. Maybe not 20+ years again, but more than 3 to 6.

My guess is the person's initials are either TR or SF. With it being only 6 months, I would lean more towards TR, but it would be totally cool if it was SF.
