Favre plans to report to Packers' camp
GREEN BAY Brett Favre has told the Green Bay Packers he plans to report to training camp this weekend, according to an NFL Network report today—a move perhaps designed to force the team to quickly work out a trade for the three-time MVP.
According to the report, Favre told Packers general manager Ted Thompson on Thursday that he plans to report to camp and will formally petition NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to be reinstated as early as today.
Favre’s presence in camp could cause a major distraction for the Packers, providing the team additional motivation to work out a trade.
The team committed to moving on with Aaron Rodgers after Favre retired in early March, led them to believe he was coming back in late March, then decided to stay retired—until he apparently changed his mind once again in recent weeks.
Packers players are scheduled to move into their dorm rooms on Saturday, and their first team meeting is scheduled for Sunday morning. Their first practice is Monday morning.
Team officials did not immediately return telephone calls from The Associated Press. Packers coach Mike McCarthy is scheduled to address the media on Saturday.
In an interview with Fox News last week, Favre said it was “tempting” to show up to Packers camp to call the Packers’ “bluff.”
But, Favre added: “I don’t want to go back there just to stick it to them.”
Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy reiterated Thursday that if Favre were to return to the Packers, it would be in “a different role” — presumably not as the starter.
“We said we would welcome him back, and he’ll have a different role,” Murphy said, speaking with reporters after Thursday’s Packers shareholders meeting. “But what’s going to happen if that occurs, we’ll have to look and see the situation at the time.
“That’s a little bit of a technicality. But I guess there’s two questions. We have said we would welcome him back. But whether he will come back is another question. And a lot of it goes back to, we want to work with Brett, and be fair to him and help give him what he wants.”
Packers officials have not publicly discussed the possibility of trading Favre, but Murphy might have hinted at such a move when he conjured the image of Joe Montana in a Kansas City Chiefs uniform.
“We want to have positive feelings about Brett and the Packers, and we want him to continue to be a part of the Packer family,” Murphy said. “I think the way this is handled will be important in terms of how that plays out in the future.
“But I’m also cognizant of some of the things that have happened in the past with Joe Montana ending his career with the Chiefs. Now you look back on it, most people might not remember that he played with the Chiefs.”
Favre hadn’t filed for reinstatement as of Thursday.
“He has to file it,” Murphy said. “It’s not like there’s any question it will be granted, but it’s a step that has to be taken.”
Once Favre’s request to be reinstated is approved by the commissioner, the Packers must place him on their active roster or release him. Thompson has said the team has no plans to release Favre.
The Packers have filed tampering charges against the Minnesota Vikings, suspecting that interest from their division rival was the main reason Favre suddenly changed his mind on retirement.
Favre’s rights belong to the Packers until his contract expires after the 2010 season.
Favre ripped Thompson during the interview for being untruthful with him on a series of personnel moves in recent years. But Murphy said Thursday he didn’t think a potential return by Favre would cause tension within the team.
“I don’t think so,” Murphy said. “We have such respect for Brett and what he’s meant to this organization, there will be no tension. But that’s a call that Ted and Mike have to make.”

"The Packers have clearly moved on with Aaron Rodgers." EXACTLY jvldss! :) WHY WOULD IT BE SO WRONG TO "SIT" FAVRE ON THE BENCH THOUGH? ONLY UNTIL HIS LIFELONG "PACKER CONTRACT" lol! :) ENDS? Put him IN, ONLY IF, Rodgers gets hurt? Favre SHOULD HAVE sat out, due to his MANY injuries, MANY, MANY GAMES, BUT....??!! (..Rodgers HARDLY got a CHANCE to play AFTER Favre~ LONG LIVE Farve's <lol!> WHOLE "START" RECORD, HOWEVER!...THAT IS A JOKE!!!!!) ....I DON'T CARE TO DISCUSS RODGER'S INJURIES!!! Already been there, done that! lol! :) Yeah. He had 2!..Blah,Blah,Blah! Flukes ;)

PLEASE DISCUSS :)

The Packers have clearly moved on with Aaron Rodgers. They would like to protect Favre’s legacy with the team and save some face in the process by having him still involved with the organization so I think the $20 million offer makes sense. Favre is clearly the second most successful Packer quarterback of all time so it is important that this ends as amicably as possible. If Favre remains hell-bent on playing then Thompson should grow a pair and trade him to Minnesota to get something for him. If Rodgers does not work out and the Vikings automatically go to the superbowl as all the Favre zealots predict, then it is Thompson whose butt is on the line and I don’t think the Packers wll offer him $20 million to retire.

Reinstate Brett, and stop playing around by saying he'll be second string. The fact is that the Packers know how good he is; otherwise they would not be trying to force him to retire. If they know that he'd be a threat somewhere else, as their actions clearly suggest, then they need just to swallow their pride and reinstate him. All the rest is minor details. I'm shocked at the disloyalty and also shocked at the lack of cool-headed reason. Brett's still the greatest, and we need him.

Nooo I didn't "WISH" injury on anyone including Favre. I am a fan of the Pack and Favre, but this is all on him. I disagree with you about it being the fault of the media, he was the one standing at Solders Field a couple years ago crying out his eyes saying he would miss these guys. Then every other year not saying if he would come back untill the last second. He fooled alot of people and I also bought into it. This time he should be a man of his word.

After all the sniffling, tears and crying Favre did while announcing his retirement "on his own terms", he NEEDS to stay retired. I love watching him play, but, c'mon, every year we go thru the "should I stay or should I go". It's TIME to hang it up Favre while you're on top. This is another Michael Jordan replay!

Here's a little nugget of wisdom from BR549 "Can anyone explain why dallas is America's team? Didn't that start in the 90's when they won the superbowls? Case closed quagmire? There is no way he is going to be playing in the NFC north let alone in the NFC at all. He screwed with all of the fans and the team for the last 4-5 years on hanging it up, he should just be done. The conditions on his release are not going to be easy for him. Just in the best interest of the Packers and the team as a whole.

OK, obviously Brett still wants to play. If the Packers don't want him, they should let him go to a team that does. Trade him or give him a "conditional" release. The condition being that he can not sign within the division. Case Closed!

Ted Thompson has asked Favre all along if he wanted to come back and he always said no. Ted asked him again a few months back and Favre said he was interested in coming back to play. Ted and MaCarthy made plans to head down to Mississippi to meet with him and finalize the plans and Brett pulled out (this was before the draft). So, the front office went on as usual and drafted a couple of quarterbacks. Now all of a sudden training camp gets closer and Brett gets the itch to play (we all knew he would). I blame them both. Favre should have never hung it up. And Thompson should at least give Favre the chance to compete for the starting quarterback position. How is that going to hurt the team? A little competion would be good for both of them. If Favre sucks and can't beat out Rogers than trade him. Pretty simple solution.

This should be interesting. My guess (I'm not a sports expert by any means) is that Farve will show up to camp to prove he's conditioned and ready to play. This will put the Pack in a position to get better trades for him. I strongly doubt he'll sit on the bench in favor of Aaron Rogers.

Favre is like the woman you have lived with for a long time. She threatened to leave the past several years and this year when she finally did, you moved on to a new woman. Then, several months after walking out, she starts e-mailing and calling, wanting you to take her back. Then she shows up on your doorstep to find you in bed with the new woman and expects you to kick her to the curb and invite her back in. Sure you have some great history with that woman but she is obviously nuts and it is time for you both to move on.

I know I said last week that Brett was staying retired, and at the time, those were his intentions. I know I will get ripped for being a fair-dwelling fortune teller with a cloudy crystal ball. BUT... once you figure out who Jane Skinner is (on Fox News), many questions in this on-going soap-operaesque saga will be answered.

Hope Favre has been working on holding the clipboard for the high school team in Kiln to get ready for this season!
No wait, here's the scenario:
We trade Favre to Tampa for a 5th round pick.
Rodgers starts against Minnesota who will try confuse the young quarterback with unrelenting blitz pressure (plus they have a big score to settle for the tampering charges). Allen and Williams put him out for the season after a very hard sack.
Brohm or Flynn - eenie, meenie, miney, moe.
Tampa beats the Cowboys to go to the Superbowl.
