Romo's appearance spices up Fischer

— Tony Romo doesn’t need the publicity.

The Burlington native gets plenty of that as the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys. And dating Jessica Simpson—the two were spotted in a Janesville restaurant Friday night—keeps the paparazzi busy, as well.

No, Romo played in Friday’s Ray Fischer State Medal Play Championship at Riverside Golf Course for one simple reason. He’s good.

Romo fired a three-under par 69 in the first round and is four shots off the lead. The $60-million man was as long off the tee as anyone in the 172-man field, and as down-to-earth as could be with the numerous autograph seekers that hounded him after his round.

“We just got done with football last week (mandatory training camp), so I wanted to come back to Wisconsin and see my family,” Romo said. “When my dad (Ramiro) said he was playing in this tournament, I said I’d play along with him.

“Part of the reason I like to get out in public and play golf is because people understand the game and the etiquette. And that was the case today. That makes it much more enjoyable.”

Romo started on the back nine and shot an even-par 36. He rallied for a 33 on the front thanks to birdies on three of the last four holes. With 18 holes today followed by cuts that will shrink the field to the top 70 plus ties, Romo is concerned with a weekend that will likely include 56 holes of golf.

“I don’t remember the last time I played 36 holes of golf in one day,” Romo said of Sunday’s format.

“I may call it a day after the first 18,” Romo said in jest. “It will be fun if you’re in contention. If you’re not, it will be a mental grind.”

Romo’s mental toughness might prove important if he stays in the hunt. Hole No. 16 at Riverside is very low on the stress level compared to the wrath of former Dallas coach Bill Parcells or a legion of Cowboy fans who don’t accept losing.

“I enjoy putting myself in situations where there’s pressure on me to perform,” Romo said. “And the more times you can get that feeling of being able to perform at your highest level, it gives you a better chance to perform at the highest level in football.

“I was a terrible golfer when I was younger. I’ve only gotten a little better the last couple of years because my putting has gotten better.”

The 2008 Ray Fischer champion may come down to a pressure-packed Sunday afternoon. That’s a situation Tony Romo is well equipped for.

Yeah Des Moines. That is such a hot bed for big business too (sarcasm). Jemyski: Nice talking to you babycakes. Remember UHaul is always available. Since you asked, I'll get to single mothers the day after I swing by your place to help you sandbag as you requested. You will have to wait though as I would have to help everyone else in town first. Lastly, if I did manage factory workers, don't you think I probably would have never left a town with so much manufacturing in it? It would be like being a stockbroker and leaving NYC.

cocktail...you have it wrong, sweetheart! I have NEVER requested anyone to upload their pictures. Sorry for your wrong information. As far as me being a townie, DAMN RIGHT! I am living in a great town and raising my children in a wonderful community. I don't have to explain that to you anyways. I am flattered that you assume that I am educated in Pshycology! You must know that I nailed you right on. It is sad that a "big towner" like yourself has to pick on little towners like myself. It's o.k. though. I understand why people like yourself feel the need to bully. It's probably what you do while you are managing your factory workers. Can't say I have ever worked in a factory but if I did , so what? Now your picking on factory workers? I will let them deal with your sorry attitude toward working people. What, are you going to pick on single mothers next? Oh well, lovely talking to you.

Whoa, I'm thinking Janesville is much better off without a certain person in there town. Nasty & very bitter about something for sure. Don't sweat the small stuff Janesville its not worth it. Being humble & approachable is far more real & welcoming to many & I am sure Tony & Jessica had an excellent time as many of you did just able to see them. There is nothing like family, community & caring people to help you get back to the real world & your town sounds like it has all that.

Sorry to disappoint but the reason I left wasn't because I was picked on. If you haven't noticed yet, the town of Janesville isn’t known for big business. That is why most college grads with degrees such as a BBA or MBA leave town as fast as they can. I would hardly call your associates degree in psychology a degree either. Congrats on using a big word such as proctology. I am sure you impress your friends at the factory with your big vocabulary (sarcasm). Oh, and you obviously don't have a lonely life if you are requesting for individuals to upload pictures of Jessica and Tony eating at an Olive Garden so you can look at them (sarcasm). You were probably that poor kid in school who was picked on all the time and that is why you moved. For that, I am truly sorry :( I love my town and your B.S. really ticks me off. When you have something positive to say than you should log in and speak what little mind you have. If you would have used some simple reading comprehension skills, you would have concluded that I was making fun of the fact that people were freaking out about seeing a celebrity. So by that logic, I would not “think I am cool” because I live in a city that celebrities are frequently spotted. And your comment about me helping with sandbags was just plain asinine since I don’t live anywhere near Janesville anymore. As soon as I got my degree, I was out of that hick town. Also, you were the one complaining about the misery, so my suggestion to call UHaul was a valid one. There are plenty of cities and towns where the economy and near future are not so bleak.

How many home town boys actually stick to their roots such as Romo seems to do? He obviously hasnt let the stardum get to him and thats great! They stopped and ate at Hernandez in Delavan and were very personable. Even taking pictures with some children I was told. First there was a family dinner at a Janesville, Wis., Olive Garden. Then, there was the Old Navy shopping trip! While in her boyfriend's hometown, Jessica Simpson visited the store with Tony Romo and his mother – and a source says the two ladies went off to pick out clothes for the football star. Simpson bought her beau $90 in clothing, including some madras shorts and T-shirts

Our family was in the restaurant sitting in the section about 30 feet from Jessica and Tony. I have to tell you, were it not for the manager and a couple of the staff keeping people away from them, they would never have been able to enjoy their meal. We were sitting at a table on the other side of the glass from the entry area where people sit/stand around waiting to be seated. People were gawking thru the windows and taking pictures with cell phones etc. The restaurant had put a wine rack on one side of Jess and Tony's table to kind of block the view of them. It got so bad at one point that my son stood up at the end of our table just so the rude people on the other side of the windows could not see thru and would maybe realize how rude they were being to us too. Some lady standing there with her cell phone yelled for him to sit down, he was in the way. After a while the blinds had to be shut on the windows behind Jess and Tony because people started taking pictures thru those windows too. I know they are celebrities folks but consider how your rudeness may be affecting the other patrons. The funniest part of the evening was when our granddaughter, who is 6, said "who is Jessica Simpson anyway?" LOL

As far as I'm concerned as long as you live in our fine state you can be a fan of any team that you want, after all this is a free country; but if you don't like our Packers you are heavily outnumbered & should just keep your mouth shut. As for the Cowboys having the most fans in America you may be right. Just goes to show what I've known all along, there are more stupid people in this country then there are smart ones.

Only a Dallas Cowboy fan would look at this stat and think it was some sort of badge of honor even if it was true.A whole TWO years!! Seems you forgot about Pacman Jones in your google search. And when did Lofton play for the Packers? Chumura got off of that charge and that was 14 years ago. How about something a little more recent. And Brett is a class act normal guy to very personable. I met him on a golf course in Mississippi a few years back and they were a group behind us. They had to play through because Brett was going to be late for a meeting. Crazycatlady it is fine that you are from Wisconsin and root for the Packers, and thus think they are the most popular team. The problem exists when you honestly believe the rest of the nation thinks that as well. I can assure you they do not. The Cowboys consistently win popularity polls which is why their games are nationally televised more than any other team. I was born and raised in this state but I have traveled extensively and can assure you there are more Cowboys fans nation wide than any other team. Type in "America's Team" into Google and see what comes up, sorry to disappoint you it is the Cowboys not the Packers.

This is what makes football great, the trash talk, and just having a rival in general. If Green Bay beat Dallas in the 90's there would be so much hate from them too. Its easy to say you could care less when your the one winning in that position. Bottom line is I can't stand any team except the Pack. So to me all other teams are my most hated. Dallas, New York, Chicago, Minnesota, Detroit, Washington, Philadelphia, New england, etc, all of them. So you "Wanna-Be America's Football Team"(Dallas)can just deal with it. Being a fan is fun. The word fan comes from fanatic, and thats what we are of our beloved Packers. If we have any convict football players, we will send them your way, you Cowboys sure do love to hire the criminals. especially when one owns the team....oh that was low, I should keep the gloves up. And if any packer fans want to wear the Favre's jersey and never wash it? Thats our perogative, and its our right. It just shows how important Brett meant or means to us. And how much BETTER Favre was and is than Aikman, Starbuagh, and Romo combined. And I hope no one throws that "How many Super Bowls" garbage. Dallas won 3 Super Bowls with Aikman on 2 simple things. Emmitt Smith and Defense. Aikman was no better than Trent Dilfer. For starters he couldn't take a hit, or play in the cold. And what record does he hold again? Oh yea, NONE. I suppose it helped to have Irvin(criminal), Harper and Novacek. A great fullback(Moose) and a legend at RB. Oh yea, a pretty solid OL. So why is Aikman great? He wasn't. His supporting cast was, oh yea, and the coaching was there, till JJ got some brains and left. Oh ranting again, I have alot of opinions, I don't mean any harm, just thoughts.

And I just want to say, Jessica Simpson is hot!!!! Congrats to Tony! Now he's got the rich & the beautiful! (figured I never talked about the actual article)

Glad to see celebs hitting Janesburg!

What is it with you Cowboy haters here in Wisconsin? Do you not realize down in Dallas no one could care less whether the Packers win or lose? They are concerned with the teams in their own division. Get over your disappointment from the 90's when Dallas owned the Packers and move on. At this rate you Packer fans will be wearing your Brett Favre jerseys for the next 25 years, probably without washing them.

whydoyouask...I was not trying to paint the Cowboys as squeaky clean; I was merely pointing out to "mymaro" that we are not the only team with a few "bad apples" over the years. Yes, there have been a few discrepancies with our players, but so have other NFL teams...it comes with the territory when you have 53 players on each team...you can't expect them all to be angels.

It's pathetic how people spit on the Cowboys; I don't know of any team in the NFL that has such a following through the good times & bad. Most people are "fair weather fans" but Cowboys fans are die-hard...we don't quit! Now, get ready for another 20 years with David Whitehurst as your quarterback...GOOD LUCK!!

Hey zindajd, does the name Pacman Jones ring a bell? What about the good ol' days of the 1990s when Michael Irvin was running around with hookers, in hotel rooms with crack cocaine, using the "White House," etc.? What about Nate Newton, getting caught with a vanload of drugs not once, but twice?

My point is: nowadays, there aren't too many pro sports franchises who can say their players are squeaky clean, so please don't paint the Cowboys as a role-model franchise. When it comes to extracurricular activity off the field, the Cowboys are no better than the Packers or Bengals or anyone else.

Jessica is far from stupid if people would move past the Newly Weds?? People grow & mature usually & in this case she has. People just want to keep her in a relationship she wanted out of. living in the past is not good. Jessica has done exceptionally well for those that care to do some real research other that the tabloids. This is a great couple so for you people in Janseville & Burlington & if your ever given a chance sometime try to get to know her for her. Put the other crap out of your head. You will not be dissapointed. Then you will see what Tony sees in Jessica.

where do i start? - MYMARO - dallas just happens to be the ONLY team in the NFL NOT to have a player arrested/charged with a crime in the last two years (look it up brain surgeon!) BR549 - America's Team was hatched in 1960 when the Cowboys originated, and no other team wanted to play on Thanksgiving - WHYBESAD - Romo was not drafted by the Boys, he SIGNED with Dallas, even though he was offered more $$$$ to play for Denver - (who just happened to beat the Packers in the Super Bowl in case you forgot, ending a long string of NFC victories in the Super Bowl, three of which were won by the Cowboys!!!) And as I so elegantly noted, Romo (America's QB) is a class act, who obviously perfected that trait far away from you Packer clowns, who by the way, are in for a long year!

wn8c-apologies accepted. For everyone else, I really didn't post my blog to start a war over football teams. Hey, if you make it to the NFL you have some talent as far as I am concerned. My point was that this is "Janesville" and not too many people have been in this town (well except for Bruce Sprinstein, George Bush, Michael Jordan, Geraldo, etc.) I just really could not believe my eyes when I saw how normal they seemed just sitting there having dinner at Janesville's Olive Garden. I know everyone is saying "who cares because she is stupid" I try to teach my children to be respectful to EVERYONE. My children have still not stopped talking about seeing these two people. It was all about the excitement not how big their I.Q. is.

Are some of you confusing Jessica with Britany? Aside from the tuna fish comments, she's actually done very well for herself. I don't listen to her music, but she has had some hit songs and been in a movie or two. Considering the industry that she is in, she seems to present herself quite well. Granted, she's not your Mother Theresa, but then, who is? Jessica is also not too bad to look at either!

Jemyski --- Sorry for calling you tacky and distastefuly. May be if your post would have been a bit more descriptive I would not have had to interpret its meaning on my own. When you said you were at Olive Garden, I assumed you were actually in the restaurant when you took the pics. I really did not stop and think, "hey they were somewhere at Olive Garden when these pics were taken, perhaps the restaurant, the parking lot, behind the dumpster." I simply assumed you meant inside. My apologies.

Jeez the guy plays for the team that drafted him. It's not his fault it happens to be the Cowboys. He makes do with what he has been given. Dallas would have been thrilled to have Favre on their team for as long as the Packers had him. Don't let them tell you otherwise. And who cares who he dates. Like any gy in Janesville won't give their left are to date Jessica Simpson. Dumb or not she is still pretty good looking. They obviously like each other and are happy. Let it go.

Can anyone explain why dallas is America's team? Didn't that start in the 90's when they won the superbowls? After that great run, they weren't that good until the last two seasons. zindajd, i hear wal mart has a sale on kleenex. maybe when youre done crying about people picking on your QB you can go get a box to dry the tears. Dallas really is pathetic, I think Romo is the only upstanding person on that team, not to mention the only one not on parole or probation. I hear Ray carruth is going to be out of prison in a few years, I bet he could resurrect his career with the Dallas criminals. With Romos outstanding character he should move on and find a team that is held in as high of regards as he exemplifies.

All I have to say is...WOW! My husband & I walked alongside Tony Romo during the tournament the last two days & I am utterly impressed! He wasn't your typical famous athlete who fends his/her fans off with security; he was very friendly & talkative with the people that came out to see him play. We could literally stand right next to him & strike up a conversation. I dare you to try that with Favre! After the round, he would thank all his followers for their support & simply smiled as people mobbed him asking for autographs or pictures; speaking of which...I never did get my Sharpie back!!! Dallas fans are just a different breed of people - we love our team & our quarterback and will do what we can to show it; nothing anyone can say about the team-members' personal lives will shake that. I can only imagine what it feels like to be under a microspope 24/7 & it takes a really good hearted person like Tony (and Jessica) to keep smiling through it all. It would really be nice if people could stop picking on our quarterback & his girlfriend; don't you have anything else better to do?
