Fireworks set to go
JANESVILLE The Jaycees fireworks and Fourth of July celebration will be held at the Youth Sports Complex off Wuthering Hills Drive.
The abutting property owners in the fireworks’ debris zone were to OK the plan. But now that won’t be necessary.
After Monday night’s city council meeting, the Jaycees met with city parks director Tom Presny and adjusted the 500-foot fallout area enough north so it won’t bother nearby businesses, said Jim Knilans, event chairman.
The Jaycees were forced to find a different site for their annual event because Traxler Park is flooded.
The Jaycees, in conjunction with the city parks division, also is drafting a letter the Jaycees will hand deliver today to about a dozen residents whose homes are on Ruger Avenue, between Wright Road and Highway 14 and back up to the sports complex, Knilans said.
“The letter will address the music being played at the festival,’’ he said.
But it also provides other information, Presny said.
That includes making the residents aware of the event, its dates and times, activities taking place and contact information plus asks them if they anticipate any concerns.
“Our hope is to try to accommodate those concerns,’’ Presny said.
Presny said the different entities involved in the complex have agreed to allow the event to be held there. They include the coalition’s four youth organizations—Rock Soccer Club, Janesville Youth Football, Janesville Youth Baseball and the YMCA of Northern Rock County.
The event dates are July 3, 4 and 5. Celebration hours are 4 to 11 p.m. Thursday and from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday with fireworks at dusk on Friday.
The Youth Sports Complex is 86 acres, more than twice the size of Traxler Park.
The fireworks will be ignited in the baseball fields on the east portion of the complex.
Spectators will sit on the west side of Wuthering Hills Drive, where the football and soccer fields are located. The football fields will be roped off.
Police have created a plan to control traffic and park 500 vehicles, Presny said.

Dynamite Society regrets to announce that due to an error in communication and booking we will not be appearing at this years annual Jaycee's 4th of July Celebration Friday evening. Sometimes these things happen and we sincerely apologize to all our friends and fans that planned to come out and watch us play. We are extremely bummed that this one fell through. The Jaycee's have worked extra hard this year to pull the fest off after having to relocate it last-minute due to the flooding at Traxler. We encourage you to go out and enjoy the fest and support the Jaycee's and our friends in 2211 and reward them for continuing to do all they do to make sure that Janesville has a place to celebrate and a great fireworks show to enjoy every year!

No reason to be scared. Amtec is an ammunition factory. There's gunpowder and finished product stored in the warehouse. The likelyhood of the building catching fire from fireworks is slim at best... I was just making a joke.

Okay, IrishMafia, now you have me scared. Is that ammo storage area really a threat? Why is the stuff stored there anyway?

The Jaycees might want to consider the fact that Amtec Corporation is loaded to the rafters with gunpowder and thousands of rounds of military-grade ammunition and is located less than a mile from the Sports Complex.
Try not to set the joint on fire.

Ok, Blue Olives are Ok. Rainbow Bridge- not on their schedual to be in Janesville.
There is no shade at the YSC like at Traxler, so I'll look forward to it going back to Traxler next year. On the bright side, no trees to block views when the show starts.
Are they bringing in any picnic tables from other parks for this, or are the tables inaccessable from the floods?
Remember your mosquito spray!!

How many of you would have been happier if they would have jsut cancelled this year? Or would you have complained about that too?
I think this will be the best spot to hold them. I work out here. There will be more than enough places to park and watch.
Although I do have a couple of concerns. The cornfields are just now coming up. The stalks are probably about 2ft or taller now. How are they going to protect the crops in the area fields.
The other concern is traffic on Hwy 14. There will be people slowing down and gawking at the show rather than concentrating on the road.
I think people will be surprised as to how well this location will work over Traxler Park. Don't get me wrong, I love Traxler Park. But the traffic and congestion is just as bad down there.
Also, please donate to the Jaycees. It is the best way to thank them for the show. I know I will find a way to give them a donation this year.

Let's hope that the next Jaycee community service project this summer will be restoring the soccer fields to their current state of play. I would hate to see the months of hard work put in by Rock Soccer Club volunteers be wasted for a couple of nights of partying.

Traffic will be a nightmare especially after the fireworks. Isnt Racine street closed because of contsrtuction out there? This means everyone will have to go to the left! where are they going to park the 500 cars? on the fields? I thought people were against this because it will rip up the fields.

ok, more than 500 vehicles on just one side of the river... look as to how crowded the hospital parking lot and the surrounding streets are just to see the fireworks... it's a madhouse!! the youth complex will at least be able to accomidate the larger crowd... yes, traxler was convenient because of its central location, but times are changing... our community is getting larger by the year, and i think that having the festival and fireworks at the youth sports complex is a well thought out and wise decision...

It's going to be interesting. The downtown fireworks easily attract more than 500 vehicles on just one side of the river. There are multiple places for people to watch, and many people in the area simply walk themselves to their favorite spot. I hope it isn't a madhouse.
