— Vicious storms rocked the area Saturday with heavy rains, vivid lightning and deafening thunder.

This Saturday, the thunder continues but might not be weather.

About 1,500 motorcycles with more than 2,000 riders at noon Saturday will fire their engines to a roar and rumble from Kutter Harley-Davidson/Buell, 3223 N. Pontiac Dr., Janesville, and roll through Rock County in the 14th Annual Tub Run.

Riders hope to raise $200,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Southwest Wisconsin chapter.

Tub Run publicist Lori Heffel said after tacking on the dollars raised at last year’s event, the Tub Run became the second-largest MDA fundraiser in the country by a Harley-Davidson Owner’s Group.

In its 14 years, the Tub Run has brought in $1.1 million for the MDA, all of which gets dropped into the association’s local chapter that serves Rock County and 18 other area counties in southern Wisconsin, Heffel said. She said 44 local families directly benefit from the money raised at the Tub Run.

“Janesville’s really got something to be proud of,” Heffel said.

The money goes toward wheelchairs and to help ease the cost of summer camps for local children with muscular dystrophy and other neuromuscular diseases, she said.

After leaving Janesville, riders will head to Clinton, where the town “practically shuts down,” Heffel said. From there, they will circle back to Thresherman’s Park near Edgerton for food, games and entertainment.

Saturday’s event might cause hiccups for motorists.

The intersection of Highway 14 and Pontiac Drive will be closed starting at noon Saturday to allow the 1,500 motorcycles to pass uninterrupted. Because of the flow of motorcycles, east-west roads near North Pontiac Drive will be slow going, and motorists should anticipate about a 30-minute delay, according to the city Department of Public Works.

Heffel said motorists would know the inconvenience is worth it if they could see the looks on the faces of kids getting help.

“It’s just heart wrenching.”

thanks for info that was interesting. And for those that are inconvienced- to bad I guess. They have a great fundraiser. Take a different path to your destination. I agree with whoever mentioned all the other events that inconvience us- oh well. What i sight to see all those bikes riding- I work on sats and wont get to see it. Sound more impressive to me than inconvient.

To Nutty and all of the other people that are complaing about this event. This is not the only event that "inconveniences" motorists, and the other events are not moved around either. Other events like the 4H Rock County Fair, Parades on Memorial day and other holidays, the Farmers Market, and the 4th of July festivities at Traxler all have road shut down for more than 30 minutes. I have enjoyed all of these events including the Tub Run, and have also had to change my route because of them from time to time. Like Northernbelle said, you are given plenty of notice each year for all of the large events in Janesville and there is always a way around them.
All of the events are for a good cause, so maybe you should concentrate on that and realize that the world does not revolve around you!

Why do they call it a "tub" run?

Better yet, maybe you should get off your computer and hop on a bike and ride for a good cause with the rest of us. :)

nutty,
Why do you get stranded, if it happens at the same time and location every year? Wouldn't it be even more confusing if the location changed? Maybe you could leave your house BEFORE the parade comes.

I think switching the route every year so every citizen in the city can get delayed is a good idea. Year after year I get stranded because of this stupid ride (the cause is good, the long line of bikes that make too much noise is not).

NorthernBelle:
Well said!!! These people that complain about being "inconvenienced" for 30 to 45 minutes once a year should try living in a wheelchair everyday. I'll bet they wouldn't complain so much about their "inconvenience" after that experience.

"I have things going on to, and if there is an emergency where I need to be present, the Tub Run does not take precedence over that for me."

rockstars.... it's ALL over the radio and the local papers that this event is happening. I've even seen signs up in the area usually announcing days in advance to expect delays. It should be NO shock to any local motorist that this wonderful fund raising event is happening. There is plenty of warning and it happens every year. Janesville has plenty of streets and ways around town. If there is an emergency no doubt an ambulance or fire department will get through as they always do in traffic. I can't imagine these great motorcyclists would hold them up by refusing to move. I don't think a 1/2 hour delay once a year is asking that much for such a great cause...especially when it's a well known event to locals and you're VERY forewarned it's about to happen. Find an alternative route or delay your errands for an hour, and be glad our local community has such a giving spirit! I am :)

Ralph,
The MDA doesn't personally oversee the event. The event is sponsored by Kutter and the local H.O.G. chapter. All of the proceeds that come from this event are then donated to MDA in the form of one lump sum in the name of the above mentioned sponsors. And don't tie the conduct of a few people to the overall good that these fine sponsors and donors accomplish. These people have put a lot of hard (volunteer) work, money and energy into making this event the huge success that it is today.

I wish the MDA would keep a better eye on the operation of what goes on, and the conduct of some involved. I viewed some pretty weird things going on with the gambling. That would make the Indians stand in owe.

I really appreciate the premise of the Tub Run but just wished that it would be broken up every five or six (even 10) minutes to allow other motorists to get where they need to. I got stuck at an intersection during the 2006 Tub Run for over 45 minutes and it was deafening. I have things going on to, and if there is an emergency where I need to be present, the Tub Run does not take precedence over that for me.
