JANESVILLE A criminal check of the six candidates running for Janesville City Council showed that one, Kelly O’Brien, has three misdemeanor convictions.
The last was more than eight years ago.
“That was in my 20s,” O’Brien, 33, said in responding to the incidents.
“You live and learn. There’s not one single (person) out there that doesn’t have skeletons in their closet. Your past is your past.”
O’Brien was:
-- Convicted of disorderly conduct in 1999 after an incident at the Dart Inn.
-- Convicted of disorderly conduct in 1996 after a confrontation with her ex-boyfriend in Traxler Park.
Convicted of battery in 1994 after a fight with a woman in Beloit.
O’Brien said she didn’t’ have an “ideal childhood” and had to learn to stand up for herself.
Looking back today, she would have done things differently, but her past “made me the strong woman I am today,” she said.
O’Brien said she has attended counseling to deal with some anger issues.
Three positions are open on the council in the April election.

The question is, CAN the Gazette tell us. Previous posts with this story (now removed) asked the question of whether this is standard operating procedure for the Gazette, and I think some wondered if this candidate was being singled out.
That's what.
