I-90 crash victims identified

By Associated Press   January 7, 2008 - 12:44 p.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Authorities have identified both people killed in Sunday's crashes on Interstate 39-90 outside Madison.

Seventy-nine-year-old Delbert Smet of Fond Du Lac was killed in a five-car pile up near Highway N southeast of Madison. The State Patrol says that crash involved three cars and two semitrailers. Four other people were hurt in that pile-up.

Killed in another crash near the DeJope casino was 54-year-old Beatrice Winrich of Stoughton. The State Patrol offered no details on the circumstances of that crash.

The State Patrol estimates more than 100 vehicles were involved in crashes along a five-mile stretch of the interstate just southeast of Madison yesterday afternoon. Cars sped into a wall of fog and crashed into each other.

If people would just learn to slow down in bad weather there whouldnt be a problem. if you cant see 2 feet in front of your face why are you going that fast to begin with.

oldtimer, I have been in 3 accidents in my 18 years of driving, none have been my fault. I was rearended by 2 old people (there fault, inatentive driving) and some teenager who thought it would be a good idea to try and whip a u-turn to angle park on the other side of the street, in turn hitting me, again not my fault. I was nearly in an accident that ended up claiming 2 old folks lives and injuring a couple of my friends pretty badly. Accident investigation concluded the old folks were to blame for turning in front of oncoming traffic. You can see my 'wonder' about old people and driving.

The only reason anyone was driving "slow" was because the fog came out of nowhere. It was like a wall of fog, so anyone who was driving should have been going slow. Who cares how old the victims are. The whole thing is just tragic.

Thank you Ann Marie, I appreciate your response. Because I only noticed it on the semi I've been wondering what it might have meant.

I'd just like to say that I was there, and after driving in the conditions, I can't believe all you are discussing is who to place the blame on. It was awful conditions to be driving in, and the fog came out of no where. The whole thing was a disaster, and who caused it should not even be an issue. Reading your comments made me sick to my stomach, as did the sight of seeing the accident.

Rude as the statement may sound, it unfortunately remains a possibility. Slow driving; especially on highways and interstates, can be almost as dangerous as excessive speed. I experienced several near misses myself during the weather conditions in December. If a person is not comfortable traveling at speeds comparable to the rest of the traffic at the time, they should stay home or have a friend drive.

Hey nutty are you accident free?? I doubt it. You are about as rude as they come. It is the young people that cause the most accidents.

JCK-

Gazette reporter Ann Marie Ames here.

They tied police tape onto cars and trucks that did NOT have injuries inside. A couple college students walked up and down the Interstate knocking on windows and asking if anyone was hurt.

Why yes, I was referring to there age and no where did I say they caused the accident. But, the majority of old people suck at driving and should not be on the road IMO and IME, which led me to WONDER if they were the cause.

On the madison radio stations this a.m. they were reporting one of the semi's involved was going 70 MILES PER HOUR, when it hit a car that was going slow because of the fog.

70 MPH.

WHY would nutty ask such a question, wonder if they were the cause of the accidents. THAT WAS RUDE.

Blame the people who died that can't defend
them selves. NICE>>

On this morning's news broadcast I noticed that one of the semis involved had yellow police tape securing the door that was visible. I'm not sure what that meant exactly but I also noticed that none of the numerous cars that were visible in the clip had any police tape on them.
