Rock the jukebox
There's something almost intoxicating about the power of the jukebox. Good songs are met with high fives, dancing, singing. Bad songs elicit groans and groups of people heading to the jukebox to fix the problem. I know a few people who aren't in favor of jukeboxes. They argue that they don't want to pay money to hear songs that they have at home. How curmudgeon-y.
There seems to be a certain formula for popular jukebox plays. I sat down with Kayla and Stacy and discussed the qualities of those songs. You can hear our podcast (complete with music) here.
Once you start talking about the music, you also need to talk about the method. I know some people like the digital jukeboxes, but I am a firm believer in the old-school jukeboxes with cds or, yes, even 45s. The older models also give you more bang for your buck. While I don't mind plugging the jukebox, I am inherently cheap.
Homework assignment: go out this weekend and, like one of my friends says, hit that jukebox like the Fonz!

Great podcast. One song I thought of that I remember always playing on the juke box when my hubby and I first started dating 17 years ago was by Meatloaf...Paradise by the dash board lights. Now that was a good one to act out and sing along with.

I want country on my jukebox, plu alittle old time rock and roll. The main reason for digital is that they can download the music from the office and not have to send someone out to the bars to change cd's everyweek. plus they can also get a feel for whats being played to cater to that genre.

We own a bar in VERY northern Wisconsin and over the 18 years we have been here, we have perfected our jukebox. There are CD's in there with songs on them that "our crowd" loves and that can, no way, be taken off as they love to sing them at the top of their voices when they are having a good time....it is therapudic, I think. One that gets played a lot is "I Love This Bar", and another is "You Never Called Me By My Name", only a couple of many. It gets difficult to put new CDs on as there are so many that are favorites of either this customer or that one, but we try to get whatever anyone wants. Each summer we have a big party which has a theme and we get music to go with the theme on the jukebox. Last summer the theme was "Tailgating" so we had tons of fight songs and other team songs on there on two CDs, this year it will be "Deercamp" and we already have a Yupper CD on there with songs appropriate for that theme. We really have fun with our customers, it is the name of the game to make sure they are happy with the jukebox.

As a preteen visiting family in Minnesota, I have fond memories of my uncle Willy. He would pour quarter, after quarter into the jukebox at the local tavern...just to hear "Lucille" by Kenny Rogers. Uncle Willy passed away two weeks ago and it's been great reliving those Lucille memories.

"Pop Muzik" is a 1979 hit song performed by the British band M, fronted by Robin Scott. David Bowie allegedly provided hand claps on the recording. The Red Lion Inn had a very serious stereo system in the early seventies. It would bring the police to tell them to turn it down.

twerp13, Tony Orlando and Dawn played the hit song "knock Three Times" They also did my favorite, "Candida". I remember as a youth in the 60's and 70's going to various places and playing a juke box. So many great songs to play back then. Also on another note: Going to Tanglefoot's Roller Rink near Riverside Park and requesting songs while roller skating. Hours and hours of entertainment, Skating with girls, Acting cool. Gosh, The good old days before Hi tech took over.

I agree with the costs of jukeboxes. Insane. But you know what, I'll pay it. I hate sitting down and having to endure music that I hate while trying to relax. You know what, I even pay (waste) that extra dollar to exercise the "play next" option, which really annoys people.

I think that any jukebox that has Bruce Springsteen is tops. Unfortunately, I can only find "Santa Claus is Coming To Town" by the boss, and that's really infuriating. I mean it's a good song, but it just doesn't work in July.

Well I will seriously date myself, but here goes... One was the flipside of the song "Signs" We would change the words to say I'm absolutely right I've been right all along and do the whole song that way. Of course it was supposed to be the opposite. We also liked the song "What I like about you" We of course changed it to What I hate about you and then the verses as well which I can't remember at the moment.

Best jukebox I ever saw was ten years or so ago in a bar in Chicago called the Ten Cat. The jukebox was ancient but functioning and it was filled with old scratchy 45's by jazz and blues artists you would have never thought released 45's, like Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and Slim Harpo. I pumped several quarters into it.

We had a cential edition wurlitzer juke box in our basement. Of course we had it set to play for free. It played the old 45's. I had a couple of favorites on it.. Convoy by CW Mcall, and I can't remeber who sang it but it was known as the "Pina Colada" song.
*
Of course I had no choice as to what was on the juke box as I was only about 8 or 9 at the time, but I sure do remeber how much fun it was to show it off to my friends (that and the pinball machine we had) the only problem we ever had was that the big old buttons would get stuck sometimes and we had to hear the same song over and over again. LOL

my dad has 2 juke boxes down stairs. a really really old ami and a newer which is still really old. theyre rigged so you dont have to pay but have to do something to the one to get it going and sometimes the other needs something to because it wont pick up a record keeps searching. I do like the old fashened one vs a box on the wall. Just not the same.

Back in the 60's $ 70's when I was young & into redneck bars by far the most played jukebox song was Take This Job and Shove It by Johnny Paycheck. Second best or the one I remember best was Proud Mary. I always liked the one by Creedence Clearwater Revival better then the one by Ike & Tina.

one good way to get cheap songs: befriend the bartender. they get to play songs for free. i have a friend who happened to be a bartender, and she gave me a remote for the digital jukebox, which controls the free plays.
and just last week, a friend of mine walked over when a bartender was putting in songs, struck up a conversation, and got a TON of free music out of it.

As another inherently cheap person, I'm outraged at the expense of some jukeboxes. There are plenty of jukeboxes out there that charge 50 cents, or even a dollar, per song. I don't think you should have to pay more than a quarter. And I hate the jukeboxes where you have to pay extra if you want to hear your song in the next few hours, as opposed to the end of the night after you've already gone home.
