School district audited to find $1 million
NEKOOSA, Wis. (AP) An accounting firm is auditing the Nekoosa School District to find out what happened to $1 million.
School Board President Steve Bechard says it's not yet clear whether the financial inaccuracies were willful or accidental.
At a meeting Monday, citizen taxpayers asked school board members and district officials why Superintendent Wayne Johnson went months without knowing the district was overspending. State law says a school district budget can only be exceeded with school board approval.
Johnson says he cannot look over the shoulders of every district employee. He says he was "hoodwinked" on financial matters.
Bechard says the district's fund balance will drop from about $1.6 million to a little more than $400,000 and that the district will have to do more short-term borrowing.

"Johnson says he cannot look over the shoulders of every district employee." It seems to me that it is Superintendent Johnson's job to look over the shoulders of every district employee, especially the ones who are authorized to write checks.
Nekoosa looks like they may be in the market for a new superintendent.

Ouch..I'm guessing he was more than "hoodwinked".
