Burglars get bright idea from television show

By Associated Press   October 4, 2008 - 8:15 p.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A man charged with a companion in a string of Madison area burglaries told police he got the idea from a cable TV show.

Charges were filed in Dane County Circuit Court Friday against the two 21-year-olds, Carl Cook and Justin Montroy. Both are from Hayward and attend Madison Area Technical College.

They’re accused of taking more than $80,000 in cash, coins and savings bonds, plus electronics and other goods in burglaries in Fitchburg, the town of Windsor, the town of Vienna and the town of Middleton. The spree lasted from Aug. 30 to Sept. 25.

In one case, burglars took a carrying case containing about $50,000 in cash.

The criminal complaint said Cook told a detective he got the idea from watching the Discovery Channel’s “It Takes a Thief.” The program depicted how burglars target a home and what homeowners can do to prevent theft.

Cook’s prior convictions in Sawyer County include entry into a building and theft.

Both men face 11 burglary charges.

No such thing as a smart criminal. You will eventually get caught.
They must have forgotten about that part of the TV show. The part where the two guys involved were "ex-thieves" that also got caught.

I keep $50,000 in cash in the house... in rolls of pennies. I originally kept them in the 1st floor closet, and now they're in the basement, but that's another story.

And that's based on.....?

It's really almost your own fault if you're keeping $50,000 in your house (instead of the bank, where it's FDIC insured, even in this economy). Basically, almost any house is ridiculously easy to break into in one way or another, and very few people take the measures needed to protect themselves against a determined burglar. The sensible minimum is to make your place LOOK more risky or less lucrative than your neighbor (like the joke about two guys being chased by a bear -- you don't need to be faster than the bear, just faster than the other guy). Fake alarm company signs seem to work almost as well as real ones, for example.
.
The show didn't cause this and probably educated hundreds of thousands of viewers in contrast to the number of would-be burglars. Computer professionals know that "security through obscurity" (like putting the key under the doormat, or hiding your cash under the mattress) never works in the long run.

So what if they learned it from a TV show. The important thing is that the corporate American goons who own the network came out on top! Robberies and murders aren't their concern. Money is. I mean, c'mon here, it's not about our culture or the generations of people being brainwashed and negatively influenced and becoming the future leaders of this country, it's all about who can have the most and leave the rest with the least, right? Welcome to America. It's stinks, but, nonetheless, Welcome to America!

Well, it's a good thing that television doesn't affect the way we think or act.

maybe the 50k was a setup? That is how the show works, right? The victim knows it is going to happen before it happens.

So they wanted to emulate a television show. Mabey next time they get nabbed (because history repeats itself) it will be based upon a tip phoned into "Americas Most Wanted"
And so true.... Why keep fifty thousand dollars laying around in a briefcase or backpack to begin with?

OK they blame a tv show instead of blaming the two tards that got them in trouble, themselves. What a couple of morons.

I've often wondered about this type of dilemma. Although those shows are meant educate the public, it seems they're forgetting that burglars help to make up that public.
