6 arrested after shooting

By Gazette Staff   October 1, 2008 - 1:18 p.m.

ALBION TOWNSHIP

An armed robbery attempt apparently disguised as a drug deal triggered a shooting and the arrest of six Rock County residents Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

No one was injured in the shooting, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Five of those arrested were taken into custody in a felony traffic stop late Tuesday night at Interstate 90/39 and Highway 14 in Janesville.

The sixth was arrested Wednesday morning on her way to class at Blackhawk Technical College. Arrested during the traffic stop on charges of party to armed robbery were:

--Jacklyn J. Butson, 17, of 380 Indian Lane, Edgerton.

--Patrick D. Butler, 20, of 624 Prairie Ave., Janesville.

--Justin D. Paysen, 19, of 17 N. Water St., Evansville.

--Christopher J. Crownover, 20, of 1335 Laramie Lane, No. 5, Janesville.

--Cortez M. Tucker, 18. The Dane County Sheriff’s Office, which reported the arrests in a press release and took custody of the suspects, said Tucker lives in Janesville.

The Rock County Sheriff’s Office, which helped with the traffic stop, reported that he lives in Rockford, Ill.

Tucker, who police said was the shooter in the incident, also was arrested on charges of carrying a concealed weapon and recklessly endangering safety.

The sixth person arrested was Anna M. Fern, 17, Edgerton, also on a charge of party to armed robbery.

Detectives think she planned the robbery attempt and was dropped off at her Edgerton home between the time of the shooting and the time of the traffic stop, according to the press release.

i live in edgerton and there a "gang" that these kids are trying to start. i feel whoever lives in edgerton needs to find out who these kids are and do something about this. if i come out of a bar and people try to beat the crap out of me for money im going to protect myself, even if their minors. some of these kids were in this "gang." The "gang" wears the colors yellow and black and say their name is SD. edgerton is a hick town lets keep it like that. Parents you need to talk to your kids soon.

No, the person on the other end of the drug deal did not get arrested or anything. Since the drug deal never happened (because he was shot at) he didn't technically do anything wrong.

Thanks a ton thekid3477 for clarification, and tjncj for the article. My next question...did anything happen to the victims who were on the other end of the drug deal? I mean were they just let off the hook, despite being involved in a (fake) drug deal?

I know one of these kids very very well, and I find this whole story funny and think he got exactly what he needed. I don't even hate him, but he's hooked on dope and has no morals or values. I wish he could come out of jail a better person and grow up, but I know he's proud of jail time and anything that gives him street credit with the 16 wanna-be badasses. So I just wanna say to him, Don't drop the soap. LMAO

Yes VERY VERY sad!! I know and went to school with 3 of these people obviously in Edgerton High School. Its really sad that it had to come down to this but i know at least one of them have been in trouble continuously dealing with fights, drugs etc. These kids were involved with pills (Oxycontin),marijuana, Coke/crack, and heroine (not just the easy way also involving needles)!!! It makes me sick to know this it has come down to this but they have been paving there way into jail for a while now!! So as said before what comes around goes around and karma really does go around a long way!!

I agree woodsman. Remember the two juveniles bound for trial in that YMCA shooting? If you do a search on the Gazette it looks as if there was never a follow up story. Well one had the charges dropped and the other got 6 months of Huber and 5 years probation. And they actually shot somebody not just a van. This did occur in Dane county so maybe there will be a stiffer sentence.

I know this is irrelevant, but isn't it odd that kids from Edgerton,Evansville and Janesville were all together in this?

How does this seem odd to you? My "kids" are now 29, 31 and 33 and raised in Edgerton. And they all had "friends" in Janesville, Evansville and Milton. Did I keep an eye on their choice of friends? Yep! Did I hang out in the bars or go to parties? Nope!

When I was in high school not to long ago, that never would have happened. Maybe choosing to have friends from other cities was not to your likeing. And that is fine.

The city doesn't make the kid the parents do.

And get ready Parents! I'm seeing more and more small town kids "having fun in Madison". Now there's a fun town

Actually, it seems like (reading the Gazette and other sources) they intended to pretend they had drugs to sell to lure the victims to the location, where they would then rob them of the money they brought to buy drugs. The drugs probably didn't exist, which was what raised the victims' suspicions. At least, that's the way I read it.

If it wasn't a drug dealer hese punks would have found someone else to try to rob or maybe a convenience store. It wouldn't have stopped athing.

But I do agree LEAP has some good points.

After reading this story I was confused on what or who was being robbed. Now I think I understand after reading the comments. So was one of the kids arrested the kid who was going to get robbed? Why is there not a drug charge? This story is a little weird. I hope they do an update that explains things a little better.

my guess meinelkm is that they were setting up somebody. they were there as if they wanted to buy his drugs, and instead they tried to rob him, which led to the shooting...

I assume they meant that the kids were pretending to go buy drugs from the victim, but intended on just robbing them and leaving with the money and the drugs. Obviously some outstanding citizens we have here. I know this is irrelevant, but isn't it odd that kids from Edgerton,Evansville and Janesville were all together in this? When I was in high school not to long ago, that never would have happened. Maybe they all met in a southern Wisconsin armed robbery chat room.
