Hello? Hello? Janesville School District’s phones on the fritz

By Cathy Idzerda ( Contact )   September 29, 2008 - 9:26 a.m.

The Janesville School District’s phone and voice mail systems are currently not working, said Sheryl Miller, district public information specialist.

At 9 a.m. Monday, the phones were still not working.
Calls can be made to the district, but callers will not be able to leave messages.

The district’s phone service provider is working on the problem, Miller said.

Commerical and institutional phone systems are becoming increasingly computerized. Does anyone know if the school district has migrated to ip phones yet?
.
Keep this in mind when considering switching to a VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) phone service such as Vonage or Charter.

there is a new strain of a Trojan virus that attacted my last computer... it poses itself as "Microsoft Antivirus 2008"... whether you close the box, hit cancel or not, it downloads itself into the hard drive, and, is able to recreate itself, enabling one's antivirus software to work effectively... you can't even access the web with it in the system, and since the district computers are all networked...... the ONLY way to remove this virus is to dump the drive and start from scratch with your original software...
-----
as to why the phone's weren't working, that's beyond me...

'Hacking' the school servers from inside the network is not a hard task. Any student with a very basic understanding of how programs work can do it. Years back when I was a sophomore, I found a security flaw and reported it to my teacher (and gave a demonstration). They suspended me for it. They're using the same system today, yet are surprised when a student finds a way to cause them damage.
--
The problem is here is the limited budget. Software designed to help block such attacks and malicious activity comes with significant expenses, and the school district's budget cannot provide for it.
--
Until the schools get better funding, things like this will continue to happen (and have been happening every year).

The virus most likely got in by someone (a student or a teacher) downloading a program (or possibly something they thought was a music or video file) that had a trojan horse executable file hidden inside. Once inside the firewall it was free to spread and wreak havoc on any system that wasn't individually locked down.

onelife2live: forgot to pay the phone bill and someone figured out how to infiltrate the computer system to create the virus?

However the virus got there... how rude! At least it made news to 97.5 WZOK in Rockford. Okay, so, that wouldn't be what I'd want to be newsworthy, but hey, it was on the radio!

Spikesmom, The district and school home pages are down due to a virus. I spoke with tech and they stated that the site would not be up and running until they figure out how/what/who created the virus.

You can still access skyward access if you have it saved to your favorites. Otherwise hit a cached page of the school home page and click on skyward access. It was still working last time I checked.

Website could probably be down because the techs are trying to fix things from the computer virus that was reported last week.

The school district website has been down since last week. What's going on with that?
