3 expelled in school break-in

By Gazette Staff   September 25, 2008 - 7:04 a.m.

The Janesville School Board expelled three high school students Tuesday.

All three were accused of vandalizing school property, burglarizing a school and stealing school equipment and construction equipment.

Two were expelled through the semester that includes their 21st birthdays.

One student was expelled through the end of the 2009-10 school year but could earn early reinstatement if she or he goes through counseling and complies with staff recommendations for alternate schooling.

If reinstated early, he or she must maintain satisfactory attendance, schoolwork and behavior. The expulsions were the first three of the school year.

School officials do not reveal the identify of expelled students, but a 17-year-old boy was charged in Rock County Court this month with party to the crimes of burglary, misdemeanor theft and criminal damage. The charges stemmed from a break-in in early August at Craig High School.

Officials said gang graffiti had been scrawled on walls and fire extinguishers sprayed throughout the school. A projection TV was damaged, and electronic devices were stolen.

janesvillereader: I don’t know about doing it during school hours but I agree that they should be forced to clean up the mess they made and pay for the items they damaged.

happycamper: You said, “Being older and more mature…”. I think they have already demonstrated their level of immaturity and I doubt if they have any interest in athletics anyways.

They should make them clean up there mess during school hours. after scrubbing graffiti off the walls all day long in front of there friends they might think about not doing it again. how is spending them from school teaching them anything.

I used to (fifth grade?) break in to Roosevelt school by scaling the wall of what was the sixth grade door then go through an unlocked window. All to shoot baskets in the gym. When done I put the balls back in the equipment room. I never thought of damaging or stealing property. Times have changed. I wasn't any different than any other kid at the time. Stuff like that just never happened.

State law allows students to remain in school until age 21 with extenuating circumstances. In most cases this is used for severly handicapped students, while they are preparing to be independent. The school board is just assuring that no lawyer will be able to argue these are extenuating circumstances and have the kids back into school. And NO child is ever kept in school to play sports longer. You are only allowed 8 semesters of elligability by the WIAA. So a child who actually plays as an 8th grader can't play as a senior, which is why it is never done.

nutty, actually, the other two were probably charged as juveniles, so those court records are sealed.
.
The reason for the 21st birthday is so that they are never going to become eligible to re-enter the Janesville schools. They will have to get equivalency diplomas elsewhere. Less severe expulsions allow someone to resume their educational career, just behind their peers.
.
And yes, there are +18-year-olds in the high schools.

Just like serving on a mission, they will return and be able to play sports. Being older and more mature they will get the starting positions. Or,more likely, they will end up in the big house and the only time we hear from them is through some prison phone scam.

Why are kids that are 21 years old still in hight school? How long do they plan on staying? That would make them seven years older than some of the Freshmen, does anyone see a problem with this?

3 did it, 1 charged. JUSTICE! I expect we'll be reading about these 3 later on in life about some other crime they commit.

When I was a kid, we used to try and break out of schools, not into them.
