Brewers fire manager Ned Yost

By Associated Press   September 15, 2008 - 2:22 p.m.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers fired manager Ned Yost on Monday with the team mired in a late-season slump that has jeopardized its chances of making the playoffs for the first time since 1982.

Third-base coach Dale Sveum will become interim manager for the remainder of the season.

The Brewers share the NL wild-card lead with Philadelphia despite losing 11 of 14 in September, including seven of their last eight. Milwaukee was idle Monday.

“This was a very difficult move to make, and we appreciate all of the work that Ned has done to develop this team into a contender,” general manager Doug Melvin said. “In the end, this was a collaborative decision made to put our club in the best position for the final two weeks of the season.”

Milwaukee is hoping to avoid a repeat of last year’s collapse. The Brewers held an 8½-game lead in late June before sliding to 83-79 and missing the playoffs.

The Brewers kept up their playoff push even longer this season, boosted when they made a big splash on July 7 by getting ace CC Sabathia from Cleveland.

Sabathia, the reigning AL Cy Young winner, is 9-0 in 13 starts with six complete games and a 1.59 ERA.

Yost was in his sixth season as the Brewers’ manager. When Milwaukee hired him from Atlanta after the 2002 season, the team was in the midst of four straight seasons with 94 losses or more.

But the next three seasons resulted in records of 81-81, 75-87 and 83-79, a marked improvement for a franchise that hadn’t had a winning record since 1992.

Yost spent 12 years on the Braves’ coaching staff with Bobby Cox, and Atlanta won division titles every year Yost was there except the strike-shortened 1994 season.

This was obviously the right move. The FINAL straw was when that clown Yost left Jason Kendell in game TWO of the Philly double header where it was a near 100 heat index day! I'm sure Antanazio blew his top had right when he saw that. Especially when the back up (Rivera) is a 300+ hitter.
.
Yost had to be one of the most stubborn managers of all time. He was just adement in using failed players over and over. I really think he'd be a great AAA manager, but clearly he was not cut out for the majors where you really have to make decisions based on performance and not personal preference.
.
Who cares if they fired him with 12 games left. They are done regardless, don't kid yourself. You might as well try something, no matter how ill conceived it may be.

Maybe the players will react and start at actually play baseball for once in September. The past two years have looked like the cubs with the free fall they are doing this late in the season.

This is a bad idea you dont fire your maanager with 12 games left in the season they should have done that at the either before or after the all star game ow it will be that much harder an if they do get into the post season the interm anager doset have any playoff experience at all and Sveum had only a short playing carer with the Brewers that ended with a injury an he has been a base coach an a bench coach to this point i dont feel he has what will be needed for the post season the experience isnt there a he has never bee i the post season once i his entire baseball carer i hope i am wrong but i do have my douts aout the Brewers chances for this season.

I'm a little confused that they make the move now? With 12 games left. I understand they must do something, and the writing has been on the wall since last season. There really hasn't been a good time to fire him with the way they have played this season up to September. My biggest issue with Yost was his desire to stick with players on a prolonged slump or slide. Players like Wes Helms, Turnbow, and Rickie Weeks. Why get a guy like Ray Durham if you are going to have him back-up your struggling 2nd baseman. And don't even think about marching Gagne in with a lead of less then 5 runs like he did a couple of weeks ago against the Mets!

Well, other than the fact that this move comes about 18 months too late, I'd say hurray. Bottom line is they waited around till Yost allowed the Brewers to whizz another divisional lead, then subsequently a wild card lead, down their hind legs, for the second season in a row mind you, before finally pulling the trigger. I highly doubt that the firing will rally the troops but it's been a long time coming that upper management send a message that excuse making and lack of accountablility are a thing of the past.

I will preface my statement by saying that number one, I am, always have been and always will be a Boston Red Sox fan. That said, I am also a great lover of the, “game” of baseball. I think the comments in this blog, for the most part, come from fans of the game and the hometown team. The comments show a passion that true Baseball fans have. Way to go. My personal opinion is that a change of managers at this point in the season will definitely change the status quo. However, the change will probably be extremely positive or extremely negative. It seems like a move made in desperation and at season’s end, could make a hero out of the decision maker, or put him or her on the unemployment line with Mr. Yost. Baseball is such a “funny” game. BUT I LOVE IT. Go Brewers…..Go Red Sox. Just my opinion.

Sharp post, tulset8. Most of the bandwagoners are the hard core Packer fans who have not followed the crew since the first Reagan administration. Now they know everything about baseball...LOL. Go back to your Packers who are only 2-0 because they have played the Sisters of the Poor the first two weeks. We will see how good they are next Sunday night.

At this point in the season a stupid move by a classless organization. The free agents are going to see this and it will affect how they feel about wanting to come back.

Ned doesn't hit, pitch or play the field so letting him go isn't going to change anything happening on the field.

I am saddened to see Yost go because he is the reason the Brewers are where they are. He was a great manager for all of these young guys, but here's the deal. They're not young kids anymore. It's time for an experienced manager who knows how to go after the post season. Unfortunately, this was the Brewers' chance and they blew it!

All you Yost haters are just like Packer fans. When the team is doing good you love them, you go buy there clothing you back them 100%, but once they start doing bad you start talking trash about them. Yost for the time being there did a good job and now there on a slide you talk trash about them? When they make the playoffs please dont go to there games or watch them on t.v. just sit back and think about what other bandwagon your going to jump on next.

loooong overdue. its a managers job to motivate. ned looked like he was sleeping with his eyes open half the time. anyone can manage a team when theyre hot. GOOD managers motivate them out of slump. ned didnt know how to do that, he would just let them 'play out' the slump. i personally thought and said at the time that yount only came back for a year to get sveum on the team to take over WHEN they fired mr yost. good luck coach sveum. itll be tuff but were still tied for the playoffs and can most certainly still make it. i believe....

I AM FAR FROM A YOST FAN but...you have a team that CAN’T field or if they do snag a lucky one they throw it into the stands, you have a bunch of young hitters wearing the CHOKE collar at the plate, you have ZERO, ZILCH, NADA in the bullpen and you have one starting pitcher you can rely on. Why even go to the playoffs when you would win the first game (CC’s start) and then GET SWEPT in the rest. Just start the young September call-up players and bench some (most) of the unproductive starters.

I invested more time in this team this year than at anytime since the 80s and now they completely crap the bed in September – WHAT A WASTED SUMMER OF EXCITEMENT. This tptal collapse is frustrating. Next year, after Sabbathia and Sheets leave, lets pull up our top prospects and see what happens...oh wait, they’ll be playing in Cleveland.

Go Packers!

I didn't know that Ned Yost was responsible for Corey Hart, J.J. Hardy, and Ryan Braun not hitting the ball in the last 7 games.

I didn't know that Ned Yost was the reason Jeff Suppon and Manni Para got shelled in the last two outings.

They always say; "you can't fire the players, so you go after who you can - management".

I agree that the move should have been made much earlier in the season. Nothing against Sveum, but it will take a truly heroic effort to right this ship with only 12 games remaining. I was at the Cub game last night and that team is a juggernaut right now with the confidence they are showing on the field. The 6 remaining games we have vs. them are going to be tough. Actually I think Yost can become a good manager. Hopefully he will learn from this. You cannot sit with the same lineup day after day, week after week, hoping players will snap out of it. Speaking of hope, mine is that 4 or 5 players sitting in a hotel in Chicago today realize what went down and take steps to turn their mind-set and performance around starting tomorrow.

Not that I care how the Brewers played out the rest of their season, but it's about time that Yost hit the road. 3-11 is bad in September and it should have been done long before now. Maybe the Brewers will get someone who can actually get them somewhere next time around...
