Janesville streets return to two-way

By Stan Stricker ( Contact )   September 15, 2008 - 4:36 a.m.

From the WCLO newsroom:

The process of converting North Franklin and North Jackson Streets from one-way to two-way streets between Centerway and Mineral Point Avenue is scheduled to begin Monday.

The roadways are scheduled to be converted to two-way traffic within the week. The work will include pavement marking, signing, and parking changes in addition to the creation of an all-way stop at the intersection of North Jackson Street and Madison Street.

This is a continuation of a project started in 2006 when the two streets were converted to two-way operation between Rockport Road and Centerway.

That was a nice snappy answer to a very stupid question. Well done!

CIM? Doesn't the very first sentence in the article answer your questions?

There were several reasons for doing it, Opinions. It's pretty clear that having two-way traffic downtown is more desirable for the merchants, not to mention safer, and with through traffic dramatically lower than 20 or 30 years ago, it's obviously time to consider it.
.
The northern section of Jackson would have been done at the same time, but there were concerns about the expenses associated with the rail crossing. It turns out it won't be expensive after all, so they're going ahead with it.
.
I don't see what the problem is at Jackson and Mineral Point (and I've never heard anyone talk of tearing it out). Madison will be unchanged. Franklin (technically River) going up past the hospital, above Mineral Point, will be a problem because of the north intersection with Pearl and Washington. That might need a different configuration of islands as well as new signs, so it's harder.

I do have a question on this. Go to this link and zoom in just a little bit: http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=...
.
What is to become of the little part of Jackson between Madison and Mineral Point? Is that going to be converted also to two-way traffic? Stay one way? Or even torn out and made into green space? And in each release there is talk of a four-way stop at the corner of Madison and Jackson. Wouldn't a four-way stop also be in order at Mineral Point and Madison as that is the main emergency access point for the hospital?
.
Also, what is to be of Franklin between Mineral Point and Washington? Is that going to remain one way? That would seem a little weird to just have a small portion of the road be one-way when everything else was changed to two-way.

Once upon a time, it made sense to have the one way streets. Now, with Janesville growing outward, and traffic through the downtown diminshed, it makes sense to return the roads to two-way. Besides, I doubt that it is that much of an expense. Maybe now, Janesville can focus on aggressively renovating the downtown. It's certainly has immence potential and is one of the prettiest I've seen.
