Wis. emergency officials: No calls for help

By Associated Press   September 2, 2008 - 10:50 a.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin emergency officials say they haven’t gotten any requests to help the Gulf Coast recover from Hurricane Gustav.

Wisconsin Emergency Management spokeswoman Lori Getter says Wisconsin is part of an emergency mutual aid agreement between states and would provide help if asked, but no one has made a request.

Wisconsin National Guard spokesman Lt. Co. Tim Donovan says the story is the same there. The Guard stands ready to help, but no one has asked yet.

The American Red Cross’ Badger chapter, which covers 10 southeastern Wisconsin counties, has sent 11 disaster volunteers to the region so far and is looking to send more.

the way I see it is whether or not the president or state dictate that national guard units will be AIDING hurricane victims, the national guard will be there regardless... it's their MISSION... i for one didn't hear all this bickering when katrina hit new orleans and the southern states 3 years ago... granted, yes, people live down there and are aware of the risks, we can't belittle them... it's like putting us down for being idiots for living in an area that flooded as badly as it did this year, or even sticking around when the sub-zero temps hit and blizzards are giving us their wrath... if you can't accept the fact that no one has any control of the weather or natural circumstanses for their areas (look at CA and the earthquakes as another example), then don't gripe

Yup sannio, and it was the democrat-led congress that also helped to approve the 1/2 trillion. I love how fools continue to blame the president for all the spending when the democrat controlled congress has done nothing to stop it.

He hasn't gotten any requests because they're orders now. The States don't have any control over their National Guard anymore. I'm surprised nobody seems to care that all 50 governors opposed this, yet it still happened. Why did the president do this? Because the States are getting sick and tired of the illegal war in Iraq. Support our troops by getting them home NOW! It makes me know for sure who runs this country today, and it sure isn't the Citizens like it's supposed to be. The Gazette doesn't report on many stories like this unfortunately. As much as I like the "puppy dog smells first flowers of spring" type news as much as the rest of us do, we really need to know what our government is doing more. If people would like to find out more about how president Bush did this, plus authorizing 1/2 TRILLION DOLLARS for the war in 2007, search of H.R 5122. You will be amazed if not red faced angered.
