Pigs attack in Crawford County

By Associated Press   August 31, 2008 - 4:23 p.m.

SOLDIERS GROVE

About a half dozen pigs attacked a woman who fell on a Crawford County farm.

In a news release, the Crawfor County Sheriff’s Office reported that officials there received a 911 call about 11:30 a.m. Friday at a farm four miles northwest of Soldiers Grove.

The department says 69-year-old Judy Surface was moving pigs between pens when she tripped and fell.

Four to six pigs then attacked her, but two neighbors helping at the farm distracted the pigs and pulled her out.

The department says she was taken to a local hospital, where she was treated for severe cuts to arms and legs.

When I was in a car accident and had to have emergency surgery to remove my ruptured spleen my family was horrified. I'm sure the people close to the lady in the story were horrified as they should be at the news of this terrible accident.
Now I'm the spleenless wonder. Any mention of the word spleen-my family teases me and I'm ok with it (despite the 8 inch scar down my abdomen).
I have to disagree that stories like this are meant the be funny-give me a break. But I'm sure that it is a story that people will joke about-we're just not so used to hearing it so blatantly. Will this lady find humor in the situation in the future? Who knows. Some people will think it's funny so I would just say don't read the comments because they won't stop.

This is very serious. Pigs by nature are meat eating animals. Once a hog gets the taste of blood they do not stop. Its natures way. Thank god someone was there to pull her out. I have seen pigs turn on one and other and all is that is left is bones. Thoughts are with her that she heals quickly and all is well.

Why do you think that this story made the a.p. wire? ..because it is funny..the only thing that could of been funnier is if she would of been trampled by clowns..I mean haven't you ever laughed when a friend hits his thumb with a hammer?..Thats funny stuff..I'ts not every day someone gets attacked by a gang of pigs...so lighten up and enjoy your day...

OK, I really feel sorry for all of you, who think that this women getting attacked by pigs, is anyway humorous. Would it have been so funny if she were attacked by dogs? I don't think any of you would of found that a bit funny. I too have raised pigs, and they are a very vicious animal. Do any of you realize the severity of what happened to her? Pigs have to carry thru with there bite, there is no starting and then backing off. That is why her bites were so severe, also once a pig gets a taste for blood they want more. She is one lucky women, that there were people close by, or she wouldn't be alive right now. Some people have not survived these attacks and when finally found by others, there wasn't much left of them. So do you also find humor in that???

I would never laugh at this story, and anyone who laughs should be ashamed. It is not funny when old ladies fall down and get attacked by pigs. Where is the humor in that? I have been saying it for years to our City Council...there are certainly sick people in this town that would laugh at pig attacks. Not funny. Not in the least. If that old lady had been killed by the pigs, that would FOR SURE not be funny. But even so, an old lady falling down and being attacked by pigs is still not funny at all. What if it had been an aardvark, or a monkey instead of a pig? And what if it had been a midget or a carnie instead of an old lady? Would that have been funny? NO. It is simply not funny to hear about an old lady who fell down and got attacked by pigs. Pigs are dangerous beasts of the land, as a few posters here have already informed. And falling down in front of a pig is not a pretty picture, and certainly not funny if the embarrassment of falling down in front of pigs is furthured by a full on pig attack. Even if it is an old lady, that does NOT make it funny. Not even if it was a butcher that fell down in front of pigs, or even if it was another pig that tripped and fell down and got attacked by his fellow pigs in some sort of Orwellian outrage. NOT FUNNY. Get a life, people.

I pray that Judy Surface is okay. The article says she is 69 years old and tripping and falling at that age is always dangerous but being attacked by pigs at the same time has to be very frightening. My hope is that she has been around farm animals, knows the dangers, recovers fully and writes a story in The Gazette saying that it was no big deal.
That being said; stories like this are only humorous when the victim survives and can joke about it themselves. Just my opinion.

I feel sorry for the lady. She is dealing with physical pain from the attack and now gets to add emotional pain to the mix --- thanks to this story being published.

Oh get over yourselves you "PR police". This is why this stuff makes news, because it makes people talk. If nobody cared, it wouldn't be news.....when I was little, I was attacked by some pigs I was tormenting and they chased me all the way to the house. THANK GOD they didn't get me, because PIGS CAN BE SUPER mean, they will eat eachother.....

A buddy and I used to castrate his dad's pigs. After he hurt his hand he let a bunch get up to 60 pounds. That was one rough day getting them done. Although they are very intelligent animals, they do get nasty at times. Sort of like a few people I know.
