Dove season opens Monday

By Associated Press   August 31, 2008 - 4:20 p.m.

MADISON Another Wisconsin mourning dove season opens Monday.

The Natural Resources Board created the hunt in 2000, generating a firestorm of controversy. The mourning dove was Wisconsin’s symbol of peace during the Vietnam War.

Wisconsin Citizens Concerned for Cranes and Doves successfully sued to block the first season, but an appeals court and the state Supreme Court have affirmed the hunt is legal.

The first hunt took place in 2003.

This year’s version will run from Monday until Nov. 9, which is 10 days longer than previous seasons.

State wildlife officials say hunters have taken between 100,000 and 200,000 doves annually, but the population is still increasing.

BELL: Role model, whats that got to do with dove killing?? I hid alot behind trees when hunting, alot of drunks out their, no one said "I" was the one getting drunk, acting single,or spending alot of money. To eat out, lodgeing, gas, lisence, money that could be used for good food for the family,is what i said. Besides that,i quit hunting, because of the above reasons, plus if you want more of my life,i was shot by a hunter, have no interest in going in the woods again. AND about you not wanting to be in the woods with ME,i've had alot of brothers in the war, that would beg to differ with you, with who they would trust their lives with. You DON'T KNOW what your talking about, when your statement of not wanting you or your children in the woods with me,you SHOULD be so lucky to have a person like me in the woods with you. if needed!!

I agree with archer. Woodsman has never been a hunter if he thinks that hunting is about getting drunk, acting single and killing something. And with that type of immature mentality, I am glad that he is not out in the woods when I am out there hiking and spending good quality time with my children. He is certainly not a role model.

ARCH: Getting off the subject at hand,YOU or anyone WILL NOT change my mind about KILLING doves. A REAL sportsman would NEVER kill such a non-threatning animal,it's all about the money the DNR can put in their pockets for ANY new slaugter, certain animals should be left alone,to enjoy.

Woodsman, if you think hunting is about killing, getting drunk, acting single, and spending money, then you were never a hunter.

(Preface) I am not a hunter.
I like mourning doves; I don’t like pigeons. Yes, I know they are in the same “family”.
I believe that hunters who hunt legal game for consumption are good people. Killing for the sake of killing, is wrong. As much as I dislike the killing of any of God’s creatures, we have to be real. I’ve done it. Where does one draw the line? Who among us has never swatted a fly; stepped on a spider; put a worm on a hook; sprayed stuff on mosquitoes; eaten fish, beef or poultry? My good friend, Whatdidyousay, *w* said, “If you don't want to hunt, don't. This telling other people that they shouldn't be doing something that is legal is unbelievable. Maybe you are doing something a hunter doesn't like. Should they be telling you to stop? Would you listen? I don't like museums, play theaters, noisy lawnmowers, barking dogs, bicycles on the sidewalk. I wish you would all stop doing these things. Heavy dose of sarcasm used here.”
Doing things in a responsible way and not to excess is what is important.
BTW, doves are still welcome in my yard and I like museums.

BELL: I don't hunt, any more. Once i figured out that is was just an excuse to go kill something, get drunk, act single, and spend alot of money. Then i figured i could buy some real goood meat, put it in the freezer, and everyone would eat it,not everyone likes that wild taste. Just a question; When does it all end? isn't their enough game to kill without always trying to find a new quarry? do the so called sportsman get that bored with what is avaliable now to kill?? Like i said,if they need more action, you all can join right today, protect us civilians, and hunt and kill 24/7,just think no more being bored, then you MIGHT think the way i do!!

woodsman, its pretty simple...don't hunt then. I only hunt what I eat, and most people that hunt do the same. We do not hunt them just to shoot something, so get a clue.

I don’t see what the big deal is about hunting doves, elephants and giraffes. Why just yesterday I shot a dove in my pajamas. What he was doing in my pajamas, I’ll never know.

And what about the people who hunt giraffe? How cruel is that? Seriously though, I do understand we all have our stance on it, but someone somewhere that has the power to make these hunts legal has done just that, so really we are helpless in changing this. And really just have to try and ignore and not involve ourselves with the knowledge of these types of things if they bother us.

My husband and son both hunt. My husband has hunted for nearly 35 years. And he mainly hunts deer. And he will only shoot a mature deer (after of course the mandatory doe kill, which breaks his heart). We do not allow people to hunt or drive our land. Driving is just viscous slaughter as far as our family is concerned. And actually he only hunts our land minimally so that the deer have a safe refuge from the surrounding hunters (except for the jerks that try to sneak on our land). Anyway, my point here is he hunts, and is very responsible about it, and loves it. But he would NEVER think about killing a little docile bird that is known to be a great challenge to hunt and many say it is a great thrill because they are so hard to hit. But, that is really about as cruel as hunting elephant in my eyes. What is the point? Sure an elephant can attack where as a dove can't but they both are just docile animals, and I don't understand how someone can take the life of something that hurts no-one. Really, can't you all just buy some clay pigeons??

You don't have to do it, you don't even have to like it. But you should at least be a bit educated on the facts before you begin bashing someone for participating. Dove hunting is relatively new here in WI, which is why so many are clueless. But it is very popular in other parts of the country. I'm always amazed at how delusional and naive people have become in this day and age. Peace, love, and beautiful music... puff, puff, pass you hippies ;)

I've been in the war,and i realy don't care to KILL anything any more.I think ALL these so called hunters/murderers that just enjoy killing anything, should join the military if they are in such a neeeeeed for some action! Wait untill they ( the big sportsmans )find out how good that dogs & cats are,i hear that bambi's are pretty tasty too. WHAT"S NEXT ON THEIR MENU?? ( HUMANS????? ) These birds have done nothing, but give peace and beautiful music in the air,see if i whistle in the woods around these kind of people!!!!

wishabone, by reading your comments, I am sure that you have never hunted a small target that flies 40 mph. You could never hit them, that's why you mock it. These are the tastiest little critters you could ever imagine (besides the sandhill crane).
