Husband, wife dead in apparent murder-suicide

By Mike DuPre'   August 30, 2008 - 5:40 p.m.

JANESVILLE

A husband apparently killed his wife with several gunshots, then killed himself in their Janesville home Saturday morning, Janesville police reported Saturday afternoon.

Dead are Rexhep Menxhiqi, 54, and his wife, Shukrije Menxhiqi, 38.

Four of the couple’s five children were home at the time. One of them called 911 from the home.

None of the children was injured, although the couple’s 18-year-old daughter tried to intervene and help her mother after she heard gunshots, reported Lt. Tim Hiers, head of the Janesville detective bureau.

The four children who were home range in age from 9 to 18, Hiers said. A 20-year-old son was not home at the time of the shooting about 9 a.m.

“This appears to be a domestic violence tragedy where the husband shot his wife and then took his own life using a handgun,” Hiers read from a prepared statement. “There had been no prior police contacts at this residence for issues of domestic violence.”

Police also had not been to the home or had contact with the family regarding mental health issues, Hiers said.

Two police chaplains were meeting with the family, and Rock County Child Protective Services was contacted “to ensure appropriate care and services are provided,” according to the statement.

The Menxhiqis’ nearest extended relatives appear to live in the family’s native Albania, Hiers said.

I just needed to comment.
I knew these people who had lived in Cossivo.
It was a second marriage, as most of the husband's family was killed by Serbs, I believe he may have had some serious issues.
They were very nice people.

Sad that this stuff keeps happening. The kids are going through hell no doubt. I said it before...I think a lot of domestic troubled families (some are and don't get reported), are in danger because the abuser (usually the man), feels that they are unable to control the other person anymore. Basically, I think these people are forced into these horrible situations because in their sick minds they realize domestic violence will get them into trouble, so they go to the extreme. Regardless, there has to be an answer. These things should not be this frequent in a county this small in population!
*
If any of you think you know of a family that may be a potential domestic troubles family. You should do something. Appropriately, and legally of course, and involve the police. I feel that almost all of these 'surprise' incidents...someone knew there was trouble occurring, and could have alerted the authorities.

Does anyone have any connections at a bank so a fund can be set up? That would be great to utilize the resources!

Well this is really bad you are all fighting about stupid stuff when these kids really are the ones who are suffering! I worked with 2 of the kids and knew the family and they are all great people! I don't understand how this went from being concerned about the kids ato fighting about stupid stuff! I agree with the ones that said that someone needs to start a fund to keep the kids together they deserve to all stay together and be a family!

I live up the street and had to pass by to go to the stare and my heart was heavy for the children and victim. The domestic violence in the past weeks is horrifying and has become deadly.... What can be done to prevent these tragedies ? Well do something when you get domestic calls, rather then letting it continue. as the victims for the most part are affraid to press charges as the perpetrator is out with a no contact immediately and has access to return and finish the violence as what does he or she care if they get another charge. and it is usually worse for the victim. By the way isnt there chat rooms for people like the first commentors to discuss things unrelated to the story at hand.......

Is that what it's called now? I always thought it was just being nosy.

Someone should put together a fund for the older kids to make it possible for them to take care of the younger ones. There is no reason to make a horrific situation worse by taking children that just lost their parents, away from their siblings, and forcing them to live with strangers.

mere16, if you can keep us posted with what we can do, that'd be great. Just for the kind gesture, I drove by this evening. The police tape was still up and there was an officer 'guarding' the front door. As is typically, I am sure, he told me all was taken care of.

We all know that there is more than the immediate concerns. So, I would LOVE to help these children as they go through the loss of both parents. That, and the fact that their extended family is in Albania. I can't imagine going through this!

Just spit ballin here, but I'm guessing this was an arranged marriage. He's 54, She's 38, they have a 20 year old, sooooo, she was 18 he was 34 when they were married. I'm guessing it wasn't a marriage based on love.

I feel bad for the kids, hopefully they don't take the youngest ones away, the last thing they would need is to lose their parents and their siblings.

I know two of the kids. I would gladly help this family. I am a former teacher and think we all need to come together to help these kids deal with this awful situation. I would love to help them. A & G - I am so sorry for your loss.

YOU KNOW WHAT??Who cares how many times this blogger has been arressted or how many tickets he / she has .This is about a horrible tragedy that has happen. How about sending some condolences or somthing instead of bickering over stupid crap.
The names of the victims & address was given because the family is aware of what happen and the rest of the family lives in Romania.Doubt they are rading our newspaper online or watching it on the news.
My family sends our thoughts and prayers to the children left behind, and yes we also hope the older children can take care of the younger ones or get the help they are going to need

Back on topic, my prayers are for the kids. How bad do things have to be for a murder suicide to happen. Can things be that bad or is it a selfish act of desperation? The janesville police department do a fine job, just imagine life without them....jmo...peace

that is true. however i have yet to come into contact with a competent one. Now the few RCSD deputies i have spoke with are very personable and seem to be very knowledgable. Im sure theres a few good ones in janesville but they cant do it all. I should apologize to those select few i suppose. they are after all trying to protect us.

first off i dont "hate" cops. have no problem with RCSD or any other municipality. Have just seen to often how incompetent the JPD is. and yes i deserved all three of them. a bit of a lead foot at times. but it should come as no surprise that it wasnt the JPD that issued any of my three speeding tickets. two from RCSD and one from state trooper on interstate 43.

my disdain for the pretend cops comes from experiences i have had and a family member with their inept "investigating" skills. so before you jump to conclusions you should realize there is more than one way to have dealings with the cops

Wow! A tragedy! I pray that the extended family is able to help the kids out. I pray that the 18- and 20-year old children are able to do something to keep the other kids together. Yes, that is a lot to ask, but there are services out there in Janesville. If you are affiliated with an organization that could help these children, please do.

I can't imagine the mental aspect of this that the children are feeling, even the 9-year old!

Wow, how terrible for those kids. bad enough this happens but to have the kids there to see it is the worst part. Hopefully they can get the love and support they need.
